The win in the final made Paul the fifth consecutive American to win the title, following compatriots Reilly Opelka (2022), Frances Tiafoe (2023), Ben Shelton (2024), and Jenson Brooksby (2025). The victory also made him the oldest champion in the tournament since 32-year-old Juan Monaco in 2016.

This is the second time Paul has reached a final this season. At the Delray Beach Open, he suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Sebastian Korda.

Later in the two Sunshine Double events, Paul lost to Joao Fonseca in the third round of Indian Wells and to Arthur Fils in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. The Houston title was Paul’s fifth singles title of his career in his ninth final.

Roman…obviously an amazing week. Congrats to you and your team. I mean, today’s level was seriously a great, great level. If I’m not mistaken, you came from South America last week, and you just won a tournament last week. You’re obviously playing amazing tennis, and it’s only going to get better. You have a great season ahead of you for sure.

Tommy Paul said during the trophy presentation

Before entering Houston, the 24-year-old lifted the Sao Paolo Challenger by defeating Jaime Faria, winning his career’s fourth title at this level. It was his second Challenger title of the season, following his home tournament in Rosario back in February. He defeated compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli.

It’s an amazing event. It’s one none of the Americans want to miss. I’m so happy to come here every single year and play in front of you guys. You guys are what really makes it special. We always comment about how everyone is so well-dressed here. We love coming here. It makes us feel special when you guys dress up to come and watch us, so thank you, guys.

Tommy Paul added

His run to the final has helped Burruchaga reach a career-best No.62 on the rankings table. Paul, on the other hand, is occupying the 18th spot.

The Monte-Carlo Masters, the first Masters 1000 on clay, is underway. Paul, however, will not be playing. He, in fact, has not participated in the third Masters 1000 of the season since making his debut in the event back in 2021.

The Houston title was Paul’s career’s first win on clay. Prior to this tournament, he had never reached the final on the surface. Before this ATP 250 tournament, the last time he lifted a title was at the 2024 Stockholm Open by defeating Grigor Dimitrov.

In clay-court big events, Paul has made the semifinals twice, both at the Italian Open in 2024 and 2025. Last year, eventual runner-up Jannik Sinner knocked him out in three sets.

At the Madrid Open, the 28-year-old has yet to progress beyond the fourth round, reaching the stage last year. At the French Open, Paul produced his best performance when he reached the quarterfinals in 2025. In last year’s French Open, he suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
