The Ashes is a dream for any cricketer from England or Australia to be part of. With the 2025 Ashes commencing in November many young players along with the experienced ones will have their fingers crossed to get a ticket for the tour that means so much to them.
If one has to look at what English management has to ponder about before the Ashes, the first answer for many would be spin bowling. In the recently concluded hard fought series against India, England were often found wanting when it came to their spin department. With Shoaib Bashir acting as their only prominent spinner in the squad and his absence in the last two tests due to injury they were left with not many choices.
In times like this another young spin prospect from the country has expressed his desire to play Ashes cricket. Rehan Ahmed who is a leg spinning allrounder recently in an interview with The Telegraph spoke about his vision for the Ashes.
I’ve never been to Australia, never played there. It looks a great place to play, and the Ashes is an incredible occasion. I’d love to be a part of it.
Rehan Ahmed said
Ahmed looked incredibly excited to think about the possibility of representing England’s spin department in Australia. He also spoke about his naivety when it came to Australian conditions having never played there before. With the woes England have had with the ball they might consider him as one of the options while selecting the squad.
I know the management—if they pick me, they back me 100 per cent. If they don’t, it’s because they don’t think I’m the right man for the job there. I have full faith in their judgement. If you asked any man on the street if they wanted to play in the Ashes, they’d jump at the chance. If I don’t go, it’ll be a great watch.
Rehan Ahmed added
Ahmed has full faith in the management which has Ben Stokes as the captain and Brendon McCullum as the coach. He very well knows how they would tap into his potential if he is needed on the tour. Ahmed also mentioned that even if he doesn’t get to play the tour, he will excitedly watch his side compete.
How effective can Rehan Ahmed be for England in Australia?
Rehan Ahmed in his short career so far has impressed many with his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. Although he has been tested only in Asian conditions especially because of the spin friendly wickets present there, the 21-year-old can come in handy in Australia.

So far in the five matches he has played, Ahmed has bagged 22 wickets at an average of 31.23. He also got a five-wicket haul in his debut match against Pakistan back in 2022 as an 18-year-old. With the Australian wickets offering natural bounce Ahmed might enjoy the fact that he can toss the ball up without fear.
The fact that he can turn the ball both ways may also help him and England to counter the left-right batting combinations that Australia possesses. Venues like Melbourne and Sydney may also offer some decent amount of spin.
However, the one thing he will have to battle with is his accuracy being a wrist spinner. Often wrist spinners are guilty of not bowling with discipline for long spells and are not preferred for the longer formats. Though with his ability to contribute with the bat he might just push for a spot in the side.
