Jay Clarke, a British ATP Tour player, believes Novak Djokovic deserves praise for choosing Andy Murray as his coach. Clarke called Murray “unbelievable” and said the decision was impressive. The move surprised many since Murray was once Djokovic’s rival and is also a Grand Slam champion.

Djokovic played at the Australian Open with Murray as his coach and reached the semi-finals. However, he had to retire due to an injury. Even so, Djokovic has decided to continue working with Murray. Their partnership is set to go on.

Andy Murray can do a lot for Novak Djokovic. Maybe from perspective, Djokovic is older now. He’s not as fit as he was five or six years ago, and Andy has played the last three or four years of his career with a metal hip. I think Andy is also incredible tactically. That’s probably another element that Djokovic doesn’t have in his game and we all saw how he was able to beat Alcaraz in four after playing the last few matches almost as an underdog. But the fact that he was able to add so many elements shows how good Andy is and it’s also a credit to Djokovic for listening to someone like him.

Jay Clarke said in an exclusive interview to Sportskeeda

Before this, Djokovic worked with Fernando Verdasco at the Qatar Open. Now, the 24-time Grand Slam winner has confirmed that Murray will coach him for the ‘Sunshine Double.’ This includes Indian Wells and the Miami Open, where the Serb will compete for the first time since 2019.

Murray is expected to join Djokovic in Indian Wells soon. He has been at home with his family since returning from the Australian Open. The decision to hire Murray, a former rival, is unusual but shows Djokovic’s willingness to learn and adapt.

Carlos Alcaraz targets Novak Djokovic’s record at Indian Wells

Carlos Alcaraz has already made history in his career and could achieve more at Indian Wells. If the 21-year-old wins the title, he will join Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as one of only three men to win three straight titles at the Masters 1000 event. This would be a huge milestone for Alcaraz.

Roger Federer won five Indian Wells titles in his career. His first three wins came back-to-back in the mid-2000s. In 2004, he beat Tim Henman in the final after a tough semi-final against Andre Agassi. Federer defended his title in 2005 without losing a set and won again in 2006, dropping just one set in the entire tournament. However, his run ended in 2007 when Guillermo Canas beat him in the second round.

Djokovic also won three straight Indian Wells titles from 2014 to 2016. He had already won two titles at this event before this streak. In 2014, he defeated Federer in the final after a hard-fought match. Djokovic beat Federer again in the 2015 final in three sets. In 2016, he won his fifth title by defeating Milos Raonic easily in the final.

Djokovic’s streak ended in the fourth round in 2017 when Nick Kyrgios beat him. Kyrgios might face Djokovic again in 2025, possibly in the second round. This potential match adds more excitement to this year’s tournament.
