‘Enjoy playing Olympic Games and representing my country’, says Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic
While Davis Cup might have lost its sheen on the ATP tour for various reasons, playing for the country still has its importance and pride.
World No.1, Novak Djokovic is one such professional who likes to be dominant both on the ATP circuit and playing for his country.
The former Bronze Medalist at the 2008 Beijing Games commented to the International Tennis Federation about his motivation to wear his country’s jersey.
“I always enjoyed playing at the Olympic Games and always enjoyed representing my country in both the Davis Cup and the Olympic Games. Obviously, I don’t have too many opportunities to play the Olympic Games as they happen every four years for every athlete.”
Winning the Gold is one of my dreams: Novak Djokovic
Probably the only big title eluding Djokovic’s cabinet is the Olympics Gold. He got knocked out early in the Rio Olympics by Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.
“It (winning the gold) is one of the dreams of course. I don’t want to be ungrateful for winning the bronze because that was also a big success. I played the semis in London and lost for third place there. But I always find an extra motivation to perform at my best when I represent my country, especially at the Olympic Games as we all know it is the most historical sports event.”
The Serb is one of the few players on the tour, who has been kind and affable in passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation.
Speaking on how Olympics can help every sportsperson learn from each other, the 18-time Major winner said, “(You) kind of interact with athletes, dine with them, they have questions for me, I have questions for them. We want to exchange the experiences, share our journies, our life stories, our careers.”
Djokovic was knocked out early in Monaco this week and will head to play the Serbia Open, in Belgrade next week.
