UFC 155-Pound veteran Dustin Poirier has been yearning for a ‘last war’ since his final failed title shot last June. Right now, it comes in the form of a UFC 318 PPV headliner and BMF title shot vs. Max Holloway, which in itself is a poetic justice of sorts. Poirier welcomed “Blessed” in his first appearance, and now he might be in his last fight. But what is a warrior if not clamoring for more and more wars, again?
So, is Dustin Poirier not one-and-done after possibly grabbing the BMF title in the UFC 318 PPV headliner at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans? Poirier wanted a ‘legends’ matchup, and a Max Holloway outing fulfills that. It is one that he is willing to bleed for if he gets the silver strap. The Louisiana lightweight will also make a historic 3-0 stat in an already-historic competition trilogy contested in a range of 4,914 days.
If he wins, the former UFC lightweight interim champ also does not see UFC litigation putting up any more gimmicky “BMF” fights. Poirier could very well retire with the ‘baddest of all’ moniker if he wins against the gritty Holloway. Will he retire, though? American Top Team coach Mike Brown sees it differently, in a media conversation with Damon Martin.
I mean, I think so, …You can never say never, but he’s done really well for himself. He’s made a boatload of money. He’s set. He doesn’t need to fight. So it would have to be something pretty enticing. I mean, that could always happen, but I think he’s content with his accomplishments and content with the money he has made and what he’s done. So, you know, …I think it is.
Brown sees UFC 318 as likely to be Dustin Poirier’s final fight, but he won’t guarantee it. Poirier was contemplating being there more for his family before the UFC 299 PPV card last year. Florida was very well going to be his last war, and walk to the octagon. He did it yet again, and was ready to lace up no more, had he won against Islam Makhachev in June.
While he has similar designs now, the fighter commissioned a mix of Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ and the late Willie Spence and ‘The Boss’ by James Brown for UFC 302. At the time, the fighting community was sure it was his swan song. However, his coach has suggested something big in the pipeline might just attract the warrior back to the wars. As for the Holloway fight itself, Brown has some special wishes.
A last time to jump the ‘gilly’? Coach Mike Brown welcomes that opportunity for UFC 318 PPV
With a glorious 22-8 UFC run, Dustin Poirier has done a lot of deeds during his outings. He plans on making a final walk, July 19th at the UFC 318 PPV main event, when he challenges Max Holloway. Both are some of the consensus best boxers in current UFC competition.

A standup game or even a ground game has never deterred “Diamond” from getting the job done. In a weird turn, the Team ATT striker also touts eight-career wins in UFC by submissions. Coach Brown has been there for a lot of it.
Those have included his comeback outing against Dan Hooker to his blowout of rival Conor McGregor. But one thing missing in this glorious recipe is a guillotine choke finish. Brown welcomes the opportunity for that at UFC 318.
Everyone would be pretty happy with that, I think, [A Guillotine]…That would be pretty cool, you never know. I mean, people didn’t think he was going to rear-naked [Michael] Chandler, …right? Who ain’t got jiu-jitsu, right? No, he’s got jiu-jitsu — People sleep on it.
Poirier would rack up six guillotine investments against the berserker Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299. That is, even with Brown advising him not to charge space like that. Hooker also admitted the lightweight almost had it in the bag during their 2020 outing. Could the Holloway fight be the one where his infamous gilly realizes success? Only time will tell.
