As the 2024-25 NFL season approaches, fans are eager to see their favorite stars and teams in action. While the usual contenders are expected to perform well, the real excitement often comes from underdogs who surpass expectations and captivate audiences. One such player flying under the radar is Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.
The reason for that is simple is two-fold. Last season, his fellow draftees CJ Stroud and Bryce Young gave fans opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to quarterback play and team success. Richardson was supposed to have a decent season with his team, but multiple injuries ended his season early. That brought out the choicest words from an anonymous head coach as he told Mike Sando of The Athletic.

This line speaks volumes for the second-year quarterback, as it’s anticipated that he will make a significant leap in his development and deliver an outstanding performance for his team. Another reason he has flown under the radar is due to this year’s NFL Draft. Media and fans are more concerned about the new wave of rookie quarterbacks, that they haven’t mentioned Richardson’s name throughout the summer.
But this anonymous head coach has a good enough reason to say so. The Indianapolis Colts did not do enough to retain Gardner Minshew. That too after all his heroics last season netted him career highs and a Pro Bowl. It seems the Colts know what the head coach is talking about.
Anthony Richardson has superstar written all over him
Before coming into the NFL, the former Florida Gators star had ‘raw talent’ written all over him. The Colts did all their due diligence and spent their fourth overall pick on him in 2023. If anyone doubted that decision or his abilities, they should look at what he did before going down with a concussion and other injuries.
He won the QB1 battle in training camp over Gardner Minshew and lost his first game. Then in week 2, he won against the eventual playoff-contending Houston Texans with a commanding victory. But a concussion late in that game resulted in him missing the win at Baltimore. In Week 4, he single-handedly erased a 23-point deficit, against the likes of now-retired Aaron Donald.
So far, his teammates have provided some insights from his offseason progression. If that is the trailer, the anonymous head coach might be right about what movie one can expect. Anthony Richardson will make the media and fans sit up and take notice.
