Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca has made it clear that the Blues aren’t the mess that it looks like from outside. In fact, he underlined the fact that they are practicing with a method in place. Despite having north of 40 first-team players, the practice sessions are being hosted systematically with a concrete schedule in place.
It was a hectic summer transfer window, which saw Chelsea off-loading Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid for £34 million while Joao Felix became the 11th signing. This added to what has already been a fine Blues squad at their disposal. Maresca has confirmed that quite a few players are training away from the first team featuring the likes of Ben Chilwell, Trevor Chalobah, and Gallagher (prior to his departure).
I am not working with 42 players. That is something from outside. I'm working in this moment with 21 players. Today's session is with 20 players, yesterday's session was with 21. So they other 15 or 20, they are training apart. In the USA [during preseason] we had 26 or 27 players so [are there] Chelsea players, 42, 43, yes for sure. But they are not working with me every day. I don't see them. So it is not a mess like it looks from outside, absolutely not.Enzo Maresca said ahead of Chelsea’s Conference League play-off against Servette.
Enzo Maresca has not minced his words ever since he joined Chelsea as the manager. Last week, he issued a stern warning for Ben Chilwell, asking the English international to find a new suitor ahead of the transfer window deadline this summer. He also revealed that Conor Gallagher’s transfer was more of a move to adhere to the FFP rules of sustainability than a tactical one.
What exactly follows for Chelsea under Enzo Maresca?
Chelsea started their Premier League campaign with a deflating defeat against Manchester City as Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic found the back of the net for the latter. They will be hopeful of clinching a victory in the first leg of the Europa Conference League against Servette to keep their chances of making it to the UEFA Europa League alive.
The next week in the Premier League will see Chelsea take on the Wolves with eyes on their maiden victory in the latest edition of the tournament. With the futures of Ben Chilwell and Trevor Chalobah still to be decided, it is going to be intriguing to see how Maresca’s Chelsea fares while there is a storm brewing.
