Things flared up between Erik Spoelstra and Bam Adebayo on the touchline when the head coach subbed out the latter against the San Antonio Spurs. Miami Heat’s form has gone from bad to worse as they suffered a disappointing 136-111 defeat to the Spurs at the Kaseya Center on Monday night.
In his post-match press conference, Spoelstra was asked about the heated exchange he had with his star player after subbing him out. The head coach replied:
I love that about Bam. He and I were barking at eachother. That’s why I love him, I think he loves me. (Spoelstra said laughing.) But even if he doesn’t, I had to do what’s best for the team, I don’t want to just play him 24 straight minutes.

Erik Spoelstra has been at the helm of the Miami Heat since 2008 and is the franchise’s most successful head coach. Whereas Bam Adebayo was drafted by the Heat as the 14th pick in the 2017 NBA draft.
The two share a good relationship with each other and have made it to two NBA Finals together. Spoelstra even came in defense of Bam Adebayo after he stunned the NBA world with his 83-point performance against the Washington Wizards two weeks ago.
The recent altercation between the two may have caught a lot of eyeballs, but it showed how much they cared. Disagreements between coaches and players are common in the NBA, especially when the team is the Miami Heat at the moment. The club have had a topsy-turvy season so far.
Two weeks ago, the Heat were on a seven-game winning streak, but have lost five consecutive games since. The latest loss to the Spurs saw them drop to ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings as they sit at 38-34 with ten games to go. Meanwhile, the Spurs remain red hot and find themselves at second place in the Western Conference standings.
Bam Adebayo opens up on his clash with Erik Spoelstra
The Miami Heat have had a very inconsistent 2025-26 campaign. With just ten games to go for the regular season, the Heat are currently two games behind the sixth-seeded Atlanta Hawks. While they do have a good chance of securing a direct qualification for the playoffs, their recent form seems to be a growing concern.

Bam Adebayo weighed in on his clash with his head coach in his post-match press conference.
You see what I’ve been doing the last whatever amount of games, I don’t want to be in a play-in. He’s got to protect me from myself, but also, like, I don’t want to be in the play-in. So every game I’m gonna try to go out there and do the best I can to carry this team and force our way out of that.

Their responses to the clash showed that the two continue to share a strong bond and just want what’s best for the team. It also shows the urgency inside the Heat locker room as the season moves forward.
Miami Heat’s defense has been a concern during the losing streak
The Miami Heat have finished eighth in the Eastern Conference standings in each of the last three seasons. As things stand, it looks like it will be a fourth consecutive play-in tournament. Since the departure of Jimmy Butler in the offseason last year, the team has struggled to make any noise in the East.
Erik Spoelstra pointed out that the team’s defense has been one of the main reasons for their poor form at the moment.
That’s (defense) the most disappointing thing right now. We’ve fought hard to have a top-five defense all season long and these are the moments of truth right now where it needs to be there. We have to show a top-five defense against the better teams.

The Heat need to get back to winning ways soon, or else they risk falling to tenth place with the Charlotte Hornets just 0.5 games behind them. They are scheduled to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Rocket Arena on March 25.
