In Short
  • Erik Spoelstra defended his coaching decisions after Bam Adebayo's 83-point game, rejecting criticism of 'helping' the player.
  • He emphasized that the game context justified his strategy, as the opposing team was not competing seriously.
  • Bam Adebayo supported Spoelstra, stating that critics should focus on the coach rather than blame him for pursuing the record.

After Bam Adebayo surpassed the late great Kobe Bryant in the single-game scoring tier, many turned to criticize Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra for ‘helping’ his star player achieve that goal.

Those critics felt that the two-time NBA championship-winning coach drew up schemes where his center would continue to receive the ball late in the game, despite the Heat being up by double-digit points for most of the game.

They pointed out how it undermined Adebayo’s feat, as handing him that many free throws was almost an ‘insult’ not only to the 83-point performance but also to how the game is played today.

I apologize to absolutely no one. Period. Going into the game, it’s a Tuesday-night game against a team where they are not playing for anything. The organization is trying to lose. We’ve already lost a game in that kind of situation.

Erik Spoelstra replied

This was the 55-year-old’s response when journalist Tim Reynolds asked him about the criticism from fans and some in the media about the purposeful game plans to allow Bam Adebayo to usurp Kobe Bryant’s feat.

It seems the Heat head coach is not willing to bow down to the narratives being formed, highlighting how their opponents were clearly not in the game with the intention to win. Therefore, he felt it was justified to take advantage of it.

Moreover, he had asked his best player to lead the team to a victory, as the Heat had lost games to such lowly opponents in the past, and Erik Spoelstra was not letting this chance go to waste.

Erik Spoelstra continues to attack Bam Adebayo’s critics

After Erik Spoelstra’s first response, another reporter, Zachary Weinberger, asked the Miami Heat head coach about the criticism of Bam Adebayo’s feat being ‘unethical.’

I’m not losing any sleep over what other people are saying about it… I would do it 10 times out of 10 again for Bam. I’m apologizing to nobody about this… I think most of the people that probably made comments, they didn’t watch the game. That’s irresponsible or unethical. You don’t even understand the context of the game.

Erik Spoelstra replied

The father of three reiterated that even though his primary superstar was breaking records, it was still a winnable game for the Washington Wizards, at least until early in the fourth quarter.

It is just the final few minutes that may be iffy to some. However, he turned the tables on the critics by suggesting they were being ‘unethical’ by just watching highlights and making opinions.

It was a hard-fought affair up until late in the game. Then, when victory was comfortably in their hands, he did whatever was necessary to give Bam Adebayo the chance to have the performance of his lifetime.

Bam Adebayo responds to ‘unethical’ criticisms about his 83-point performance

Erik Spoelstra’s comments were before their game against the Milwaukee Bucks. After the game was over, reporters got a chance to ask Bam Adebayo about the ‘unethical’ criticisms about his 83-point explosion.

First of all, y’all are blaming me. You should be blaming the head coach… I was not the one letting me go one-on-one the whole game until I had 70, and then you started to send a double. At that point, I got 70 with, like, 9 minutes left to go in the game. You think I’m not going for it?

Adebayo replied

He stressed that those who have not played sports at the highest level would not know what it is to be that close to a record and not go for it, especially after having a night like that.

The three-time All-Star then pointed out that the criticism about his 36 free throws was uncalled for, especially when he is not one to get easy calls to go to the free-throw line. Rather, it was the Wizards’ fouls that helped him to do that.
