Erik ten Hag needs a break. The Dutchman has found his managerial prowess failing to take form for quite a while at Manchester United. The same was on full display against Bournemouth in a 2-2 draw at Vitality Stadium. While United were firmly seated in sixth for the major part of the season’s second half, the result against Bournemouth saw them drop to an embarrassing seventh.
Following the game, Erik ten Hag was called upon to explain and react to the team potentially finishing in United’s worst-ever position. As a reporter probed the possibility of United falling below seventh, Ten Hag hastily got up from his seat and replied that he didn’t want to comment on the question. The manager leaving the conference has sparked conversation on social media.
While the majority of comments attacked the reporter’s decision to ask such a question, others were convinced that Ten Hag had to go. Many still call for the Dutchman to leave the club and that it will be best for both parties to terminate his contract.
A closer inspection into the press conference however reveals that Ten Hag was already preparing to exit the conference when the question was asked.
Erik ten Hag criticizes Alejandro Garnacho after embarrassing draw
Alejandro Garnacho, despite being one of United’s best players this season, had a night to forget against Bournemouth. The 19-year-old started the game shabbily when a loose touch in midfield gifted an easy chance for Dominic Solanke. The Englishman then proceeded to fire. Bournemouth into the lead. Even though Garnacho made amends by creating United’s first goal, Ten Hag didn’t hold back against him in the press conference.
I think we had to repair the right side. Garnacho was not training during the week, only yesterday. We thought of bringing some energy, quality and cooperation on the right hand side. We conceded two unnecessary goals.Erik ten Hag said in the post-match press conference
Many came to the Argentine’s defense, while others said he was completely in the wrong for the goal. As United drop to seventh, fans are worried if they will remain stuck or worse, fall even below, leading to their worst-ever finish in history. United will have to muster crucial wins against Sheffield United, Burnley and Crystal Palace if they are to reclaim sixth position.
