Manchester United’s turbulent period came to an end after they sacked manager Erik ten Hag, following an unsuccessful spell with the Red Devils. The Dutchman was shown the door out after the club’s disastrous 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League.
Erik ten Hag had most recently signed a two-year contract extension with the Red Devils, but his stay has been cut short after the club endured their worst-ever start to an EPL season. The club currently finds itself in the 14th position on the table, with just three wins from nine matches.
This poor start has led to the club authorities losing faith in the 54-year-old manager’s abilities. Despite winning the club’s first piece of silverware in the form of the FA Cup last season, the ex-Ajax boss has been shown the way out.
Meanwhile, the decision to sack the Dutchman was taken after rounds of meetings, which included the club’s new owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Following his ouster, assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as the interim manager and is expected to take charge until the club finds a replacement.
The former forward will be leading the club in its upcoming Carabao Cup tie against Leicester City. He will be joined by ex-Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake, who is a part of United’s backroom staff.

Meanwhile, some sources have pointed to former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez being considered a potential replacement for the vacant managerial position. The Spaniard, who most recently ended his association with Barca, tasted success by winning the La Liga in his first full season.
Gareth Southgate being considered as Erik ten Hag replacement at Manchester United
With Dutchman Erik ten Hag out, Manchester United are now on the search for their next permanent manager. Among the potential names, Gareth Southgate remains one of the front-runners to be considered to lead the club.
The 38-year-old, if appointed, would become Manchester United’s first English manager in 38 years, since Ron Atkinson in 1981. Southgate has been mooted as a potential candidate and is reportedly admired by the club’s owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. He last managed the Three Lions, but stepped down following a disappointing Euro 2024 final defeat.
Apart from Southgate, Germany head coach Julien Nagelsmann, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and ex-Barcelona boss Xavi are also being considered for the position. Some sources have even pointed to the club having spoken to ex-Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.
