Erika Andreeva, the older sister of Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva, was left in tears at the Canadian Open after a controversial call from the chair umpire.

During her first-round match in the main draw on August 7, Andreeva was going toe-to-toe with home favorite Marina Stakusic when a bee flew too close to her and forced her to stop the point before Stakusic served. This was when she was at 1-2, 30-30 in the final set.

Despite raising her hand, moving away and just nudging the ball back at her opponent, Andreeva was forced to give up the point as the umpire thought she was continuing it, stating that he did not see her raise her hand to delay the start of the point.

This led to a heated argument and neither party was budging. Just after her prodigal sister Mirra won an Olympic doubles silver (with Diana Shnaider), a less fortunate Erika was forced to accept a seemingly unfair decision. The 20-year-old Russian called for the supervisor, to no avail. She was left with no option but to continue playing and went on to lose 7-5(5), 1-6, 4-6.

Fans have mixed reactions to Erika Andreeva’s bee incident at the Canadian Open

As the video of Erika Andreeva’s controversial moment went viral, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to weigh in on the issue.

While a large number of them were in support of the young Russian and bashed the chair umpire’s poor decision, some had different opinions and blamed her for being emotional and not being quick enough with her gestures to stop the point.

The loss was heartbreaking for Andreeva, who had to get through two rounds of qualifying to face the 19-year-old wildcard from Canada.
