Erling Haaland breaks records on his way to scoring a brace to guide Borussia Dortmund to the quarterfinals of the Champions League
Borussia Dortmund held on to their seats till the last minute as Sevilla made them work hard for qualification to the quarterfinals. Erling Haaland scored two goals in each of the halves as Youssef En-Nesri pulled two goals back for the visitors. Sevilla’s late fightback wasn’t enough as Borussia Dortmund qualified to the quarterfinals with an aggregate of 5-4.
Erling Haaland breaks records on a wild, wild night of Champions League football
Erling Haaland scored two goals against Sevilla and took his UEFA Champions League tally to 20 goals from 14 matches. The previous record was held by Harry Kane-who scored the same figures in 24 games. Erling Haaland achieving this in 10 lesser games while breaking the records of Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo should be spoken more about.
Erling Haaland’s second goal was an especially bizarre one as he had his original goal cancelled, but was given a penalty instead for it. The referee felt that Haaland had fouled Sevilla’s Fernando in the build-up to the goal, but VAR stated that Haaland was fouled by Jules Kounde in the penalty area. Haaland took the penalty and his attempt was saved by Yassine Bounou. However the latter had stepped out of his line prematurely and Haaland was allowed to retake his penalty.
The Norwegian striker made no mistake the second time and buried it in the net to cause wild celebrations. With this goal, the robotic striker broke records set by the all-time greats of the game and also became the highest scoring Norwegian in the Champions League, succeeding Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.
