Manchester City nearly dropped points on Saturday as they hosted Southampton in the Premier League. An early goal from Erling Haaland was the only factor that separated the two sides on a night where the City No.9 missed several golden chances. That being said, Haaland also made headlines for an extremely unconventional finish to win the game.

Five minutes removed from kick-off, Haaland received a cross inside the penalty area. Despite being brought down to the ground by his marker, Haaland somehow managed to make contact with the ball. His makeshift shot went directly into the roof of the net as Aaron Ramsdale could only help but watch.

The goal meant that Erling Haaland now has the most goals scored in the competition, that too by a three-goal margin. As things stand, Manchester City are on top of the Premier League table with 23 points from 9 games. The player also scored an acrobatic goal in the UCL vs. Sparta Praha.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are two points behind, although they have a game in hand against Arsenal on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola impressed and ‘wants to learn’ from resolute Southampton side

Manchester City may have won their game against Southampton in the Premier League. Even though The Saints remain at the bottom of the League table, City boss Pep Guardiola did not hold back from claiming that they were extremely good on the ball. A quick look at the match statistics from the game reveals that the visitors enjoyed 43% possession during the game.

This is in sharp contrast to City’s last two games, in which Sparta Praha and Wolves could only manage 20 and 22%, respectively. Southampton have only managed to accumulate a single point since the start of the season and remain rock bottom.

We struggled to regain the ball because they were really good. I’m going to learn a lot with Russell because they really did well. The movements they make to link the striker is not easy.

Pep Guardiola told the press via BBC Sport

Even though head coach Russell Martin is under significant pressure and may even be sacked in the near future, Guardiola admired his side’s set-up and execution of the game plan. City play their next game against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup before taking on Bournemouth in the PL.
