Esports Asian Games 2022: A medal game

The proper categorization of Esports has been under a long debate. Esports is referred to competitive video games where gaming pros compete as teams. The reason for this debate is whether Esports is a form of sport or not. But there is good news for fans of Esports. The Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) has declared that esports will be included in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China as an official medal sport. This means that the medals earned in the esports category will be counted towards the total medal tally of the country. However in 2018 esports was included in the Asian Games but the medal tally was not included. But now the inclusion of Esports in Asian Games 2022 is a reality.

Esports in Asian Games 2022: A great news for gamers

The news has made esports associations around the globe, very happy. ESFIm VP-Asian Esports Federation’s director, Lokesh Suji stated that this news was not only great for Indian Esports but also for the whole of Asia. The journey began way back in 2007 when OCA included esports in Asian Indoor Games in Icheon. Since then the esports scene has only grown bigger and crazier. The ESFI and AESF are both associations committed to develop esports in the whole region of Asia.

The announcement was made at the 39th Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) assembly. This should solidify the standings of Esports as a legitimate sport. The genre is already a legitimate competition in the eyes of the Olympic association. While earlier it was intended that Intel would be holding the Intel World Open tournament, some complications arose. The tournament was supposed to be held right ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that was supposed to be held in July earlier this year in 2020. This tournament was cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. This had led to a big upset earlier but it had been cancelled like many others. However the Esports Asian Games 2022 is a news to rejoice to, for all the gamers out there.
