Two Engine Owning employees were fined for creating hacks to bypass anti-cheat measures in Activision and Blizzard games. Cheating is a long-standing issue in video games, especially in competitive, free-to-play titles. Cheating is a major problem in the CoD community. Hackers will do whatever it takes to evade the anti-cheat system. CDL professionals stopped playing Modern Warfare 2‘s Ranked Play due to hacking. Warzone has also faced cheating problems.

Hacking has been a massive problem for MW2, and even during its BETA, hackers found ways to ruin the gameplay with tools like Aimbot and Wallhack. A video was posted to TikTok where you can see a player cheating even in its initial testing phase.

Activision has accused EngineOwning members of breaking RICO and program regulations, alleging it was a criminal conspiracy. As a consequence, the US government has forced Call of Duty cheaters to pay Activision millions of dollars in damages. Activision had previously sued EngineOwning, claiming that their cheats and hacks had caused substantial financial damage to the business.

A judge has eventually issued a fair decision after a lengthy court fight. The implicated parties are now barred from developing software in the future that violates the game’s Terms of Service and End-User License deals, including exploits and hackers.

Activision charges hackers of running a complex plan to undermine the Call of Duty brand, collaborating to sell cheats and causing major financial damage. Cheaters have a long past in Warzone, a free-to-play game.

Even though MW2 uses the Ricochet anti-cheat software to discourage cheating, some players still find methods to use exploits, disrupting the gaming experience for others.
