Split Screen gaming has seen a massive downfall in the past decade. Rarely any video game released these days comes with a split-screen feature. Franchises such as Call of Duty, including split-screen earlier, have removed the feature from the latest instalments. Thankfully, this is not the case with split screens in Fortnite.
Many gamers’ fondest memories are of enjoying split-screen video games alongside their friends or siblings. The split-screen experience comes with a personal touch that online multiplayer doesn’t. Epic Games has recognised this fact and added the beloved split screen in Fortnite.
Note that split screen in Fortnite is only available for PlayStation and Xbox. Mobile devices like smartphones and the Nintendo Switch aren’t powerful enough to run two instances of the game. It is unclear why the feature isn’t on PC. It probably has something to do with Epic Games not being able to identify multiple profiles on the same PC.
Consoles allow you to log in with multiple profiles using multiple controllers. This is not the case on PC. Needless to say, you will need multiple controllers for your console to play split screen in Fortnite.

How to play Split Screen in Fortnite
For PS4 & PS5
To play split screen in Fortnite on PlayStation 5 or PS4, you will need an additional controller and PlayStation network account. Note that the secondary account will also have to be linked to an Epic account. To play split screen in Fortnite on your PlayStation, complete the following steps –
- Launch Fortnite
- Create a duo or squad lobby
- Turn on your second controller and log in with your PSN account.
- An option should prompt you to press and hold X
- Do the above. This will result in the game being relaunched.
- You will then see multiple people in the lobby, allowing you to split screen.
If the secondary account is not linked to an Epic account, you will be prompted to do so after the game is relaunched.
For Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S
The process is identical to the one followed on PlayStation consoles. You will need an additional Xbox controller and an Xbox Live account to play split screen. The secondary account has to be linked to an Epic account. To play split screen in Fortnite on your Xbox, complete the following steps –
- Launch Fortnite
- Create a duo or squad lobby
- Turn on your second controller and log in with your Xbox account.
- An option should prompt you to press and hold A.
- Do the above. This will result in the game being relaunched.
- You will then see multiple people in the lobby, allowing you to split screen.
- Once both accounts are in the lobby, you will be asked to take over as the secondary player to complete the process.
Note that the split screen functionality and the ‘Ready Up’ and ‘Keep Playing Together’ buttons are currently disabled in the game due to an issue as of the v27.10 update. Epic Games has promised that they are promptly working on fixing the issue. The developers have not announced when the function will be available again. However, the developers are generally quick to resolve such issues, and the function should soon be available in the game once again.
