Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has come under fire by the Conservatorium Hotel

On October 28, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had its full release globally. Although first-person shooter enthusiasts are thrilled about the latest return of the franchise, an Amsterdam hotel is not happy that it was unfavorably included in the game.

The actual hotel in Amsterdam that appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is upset about its “unwanted engagement” in Activision Blizzard’s first-person shooter. According to sources, the hotel may file a lawsuit and take additional legal action against Activision Blizzard as a result of this inclusion.

Conservatorium Hotel, Amsterdam

Activision has drawn inspiration for the Call of Duty franchise over the years from actual places and events. The Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam is featured in a sequence in Modern Warfare 2 where it is damaged by enemy fire.

The hotel is currently deciding what to do, but it made no mention of its plans—whether they involve taking legal action, doing something else, or doing nothing at all. Although it is plainly the only focus of the multiplayer map of the same name, the Conservatorium Hotel (referred to as the Breenbergh Hotel in-game) is a portion of a much bigger Amsterdam level that recreates various streets and sites from the real city.

Roy Tomassen, manager of the Conservatorium Hotel, said, “We have taken note of the fact that the Conservatorium Hotel is undesirably the scene of the new Call of Duty.” He also said, “More generally, we don’t support games that seem to encourage the use of violence. The game in no way reflects our core values and we regret our apparent and unwanted involvement.”

The Call of Duty franchise has a history of using real-world locations inappropriately and without permission. The beta version of Modern Warfare 2 had a setting that was very similar to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles (as can be seen in the tweet).

It’s possible that the absence of the map in the game’s full release is similar to the difficulties that Activision Blizzard is now having with the Conservatorium.
