BGMI under the eyes of central government after Free Fire?
Krafton, the South Korean gaming developer had launched Battlegrounds Mobile India dubbed as BGMI for the Indian players as a replacement to PUBG (Player’s Unknown Battlegrounds) that was banned in 2020 citing privacy issues in the wake of India-China border conflict. The game strikingly looks similar to PUBG and as a result, a NGO has urged the government to ban the game.
The NGO named PRAHAR, that primarily works for the socio-economic development has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) as the game poses a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, security of the state, and public order. The letter stated-
"Free Fire was another gaming app that was banned on 14 February. Since Tencent also holds an 18.7% share in Free Fire, it raises a basic question: If Free Fire was banned, why was BGMI-PUBG exempted?"
According to PRAHAR, Tencent holds a stake in the battle-royale game that is the lookalike of PUBG. Moreover, Krafton is just trying to disguise the game as Tencent is still controlling the game in the background. As a consequence, the NGO believes that the game needs to be restricted immediately.
Even though Free Fire was banned in the country, the government didn’t state the reason of the game’s ban clearly. Now that the battle-royale game that was considered to be the rival of BGMI has been banned, there have been many speculations that Krafton’s game might become the next target.
