CoD: Mobile could be on its way out

Call of Duty Mobile has been a smashing success for Activision. The game had 650 million downloads as of May 2022, which is more than six times what Warzone had in its first year, according to VGC. Compared to Warzone’s anticipated 1.9 billion yearly uptake, CoD Mobile generated over a billion dollars.

Activision announced Warzone Mobile in March 2022 to take advantage of the popularity of mobile gaming. The legendary Warzone map Verdansk returns in the battle royale game, which has 120 player lobbies. Uncertainty remains if Warzone Mobile will replace or coexist with the current CoD Mobile Battle Royale.

Despite breaking records and having a sizable player base, Microsoft announced its plans for CoD Mobile’s future, which is not the news that the game’s supporters were hoping for. Activision’s mobile multiplayer game, Call of Duty: Mobile, is frequently praised for its performance. It was created by TiMi Studios.

But now that Warzone: Mobile has been released, it appears like Microsoft plans to “phase out” Call of Duty: Mobile over the coming years. In their latest report to comply with the EU commission, the developers said, “CoD: Mobile is expected to be phased out over time (outside of China) with the launch of Warzone: Mobile,” in a section about divestment perimeters.

For the 6v6 multiplayer gamers, there may still be some consolation, as this may still be a prime hub for all Call of Duty action on mobile, allowing the game to function on their new engine and UI. The 6v6 action may eventually be moved under the Warzone game in the same app.

Although this is a bit more hypothetical, some CoD: Mobile fans now believe that the format’s demise may also lead to the creation of a console game that combines the best elements of the franchise’s past. How much longer Call of Duty: Mobile will exist is unknown.
