Since their debuts, Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 have experienced a sharp decline in player numbers. Warzone 2 and the Season 1 update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 were released in November 2022 and October 2022, respectively.

Both titles seemed to be huge hits when they first came out, with Modern Warfare 2 surpassing $800 million in its first weekend and Warzone 2 surpassing 25 million gamers in just five days. The user base for these titles appears to have decreased dramatically since their release, and current data reveals that it recently fell to a record low point.

According to CharlieIntel, the number of players for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 on Steam dipped at under 90k, the biggest drop since the games’ first releases. The peak concurrent player count in the specified post, which is from March 28, is 87,621.

CharlieIntel also points out that the daily peak figure is far lower than those of rivals Destiny 2 and Apex Legends, which had peak concurrent player counts of 141,409 and 572,373 players, respectively, over a 24-hour period. The February release of Lightfall, a new expansion for Destiny 2, may have contributed to the game’s higher figure. Several players blame the SBMM (Skill-Based Matchmaking) method used in these Call of Duty games in the comments portion of the post as the reason for this figure being rather low.

Critics also point out that despite numerous complaints being made about other areas of the game, Activision and Infinity Ward failed to include several widely desired features like the iconic Call of Duty mini-map. The fact that the widely played Shipment 24/7 playlist is frequently taken out of Modern Warfare 2 suggests that some players don’t appreciate how playlists are handled in the game.

With Warzone 2, several players have expressed dissatisfaction with Activision’s monetization strategies and time-limited game modes, with others asserting that the sequel never captured the magic of the first Warzone. Players of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 appear to have many reasons to dislike the games in their current state right nowadays.
