The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 disc is only 72MB

In the traditional Call of Duty way, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 takes up a lot of disk space. However, the physical discs does not seem to contain any game data and is of little use. Only 72MB worth of data is printed.

Players who received a copy shortly before Modern Warfare 2’s worldwide official release reported that the disc contains very little data and a large amount of data is accompanied by a download. The latest pre-release update bumps the game up to an estimated 150 GB, which still doesn’t include Warzone 2.0.

Twitter user DoesItPlay revealed that Modern Warfare 2 has a disc size of just 72.23MB, but the game itself requires at least a 100GB install on all platforms. Presumably the 70MB is just the installer itself and not the actual game’s resources.

This is a big change from ten years ago when video games had to fit on discs that actually had to contain all the data of the game. But fans are still sparing no mercy, and are complaining about incomplete data on the discs they paid for.

Such dummy discs have been heavily criticized because they put the burden on the player to retrieve the rest of the game over the internet. This can be a time-consuming and expensive process for players with slow internet speeds and data limitations. In fact, this is usually one of the main reasons players opt for a physical copy of the game.

Unfortunately, this appears to be part of Activision’s new strategy to move away from physical copies. The publisher already offered incentives in the form of digital pre-orders to buy early access to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and a special ‘Vault’ edition as a reward.

This very different from what Activision was years ago. Players used to be able to purchase a special edition of Modern Warfare (2019) that included the full campaign disc, but not this time.
