Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – How to Fix “Steam Can’t Verify Phone Number” Error
Early Access is live for Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s story mode is now available in the form of Early Access for those who pre-ordered the game. While the campaign’s story has been praised by many in the community, some weren’t satisfied with some of the performance bugs with which the game was released.
Players have been encountering bugs and error codes, and didn’t get the best experience with the new game’s entry. Due to issues like this, players couldn’t even join the game because Steam couldn’t verify the phone numbers.
Steps to Fix “Steam Can’t Verify Phone Number” Error in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
This is probably because something is happening with the Steam servers or the game already verified your phone number when linking your Steam account. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 uses your phone number to perform two-factor authentication, so it’s important to associate your phone number with the game.
First you need to double check the number on Steam and Modern Warfare 2. To do this:
- Go to your Steam settings page and go to “Accounts”. It’s important to do this after closing Modern Warfare 2, as it can corrupt certain files in the game. Under “Account” you need to click on the “Account Details” option in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Then go to the Contact Information tab and select the “Manage Your Phone Number” option, then go to “Remove Number”. This will clear the number previously associated with Steam so you can check it again.
- To reconfirm, just log into Modern Warfare 2 and the game will automatically ask you to go through the number verification process again. After completing these steps, you can complete the revalidation process.

Next, you may need to make sure the Steam servers are running. If there is a problem with your server, your phone number may not be verified by Steam. However, if your servers are running optimally, you may need to clear your Steam browsing history. You need to do do the following to clear the browsing history:
- Go to the Steam client’s “Settings” option once again, which will be located at the top right-hand corner of the app.
- Then head to the “Web Browser” option and click on the “Delete Web Browser Data” option.
Clearing Steam browsing history seems to have allowed many players to verify their phone number in the game.
