“Unbelievable” and “Dehumanising” – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Mission Has Players Threaten Civilians With A Gun

Modern Warfare 2 has recently come under fire for one of its missions

The wildly popular Call of Duty franchise returned last weekend with the all-new Modern Warfare 2. It ushers in a brand new campaign to prepare players for the upcoming multiplayer game.

The plots of most Call of Duty games usually revolve round special forces operatives tasked with certain missions that have an impact on the fate of the stability of the governance of the world and other such missions. But this time, one particular mission caught the eye of the video game fan base. The situation presented has been described by many in the community as “unbelievable” and “dehumanizing”.

Reaction of the Community to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Having Players Point a Gun at Innocent People

Rodolfo Parra

In one of the 17 campaign missions in the game, the player is placed in the shoes of Mexican special forces second-in-command to Alejandro Vargas, Rodolfo Parra. While clearing out a trailer park, the two characters encounter two townspeople who are stressed by the two gunmen walking around their homes.

Vargas just signals bystanders to go back inside, but the game presents an uneasy way to deal with the rather problematic situation, by having Rodolfo (controlled by the player) pointing an armed gun at an innocent person’s face. It’s not uncommon for Call of Duty to bring up the (certainly curated) realities of war and global conflict, which has users playing as ruthless terrorists, shooting many innocent people to death, and making the show’s earlier storyline a blast.

This time, however, it rubbed the Twitter community the wrong way when the a gun was pointed at someone and orders were shouted. Some felt that the game was intentionally explicit in its references. Below are some of the reactions of members of the community to the topic in question.

As the final release date of October 28 approaches, players who availed of the Modern Warfare 2 Early Access posted footage of the campaign online, discussing what many believed was the most challenging story experience in years.
