It’s been 7 months, and the hype surrounding Activision’s recent addition to the Call of Duty series hasn’t died yet. Modern Warfare 2 has captivated gamers all around the globe. Gamers praise the newer, improved game mechanics and graphics, along with fan-favorite characters. Modern Warfare 2 has lived up to all the hype generated. Though, as of right now, the future plans for the game seem a bit dicey. As we know, due to the nature of Modern Warfare 2 being multiplayer, the game needs constant updates. These updates may involve new mechanics, new maps, new weapons, etc.
But the rumors regarding a direct sequel to this game have left gamers in disarray. Since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a AAA title by Activision, the game costs a whopping $69.99, with other editions being higher priced. So paying so much only to play the game for a year until the sequel comes out is disheartening. But in a recent interview with Dexerto, the devs, and Multiplayer Design Director Geoff Smith has revealed quite a lot about the potential future of the game.
Season 3 of Modern Warfare 2 is currently progressing quite spectacularly. As soon as the season ends, a new season with big, massive, and improved content will roll out. Despite considering the rumors of another sequel coming out, Modern Warfare 2 will have constant seasonal updates coming out. So, multiplayer gamers can take a sign of relief. In the interview with Dexerto, Director Smith touched upon many different points regarding the game’s 2023 action plan. The major takeaway from the conversation was the upcoming new maps.

New maps in Modern Warfare 2
Dexerto conducted an interview with 2 lead developers at Infinity Ward, who revealed a lot of information about the future of Modern Warfare 2. Multiplayer Design Director Geoff Smith revealed how they have intensive plans for post-launch in the final ship year. Smith has mentioned that the development of the maps is yet to start. Though, the developers have a detailed planed of what they’ll be working on, he mentioned that they’ve laid out the rough plan. Smith also mentioned how due to situations changing, plans can change too. But they try to be consistent with their post-launch stuff.
Wile there wasn’t much that fans got from the interview, some of the revealed stuff is quite important. Director Smith has teased that the final update for the year will bring players loads of content. These updates will highly favor not the casual players but those inclined towards rank grinding. Even Call of Duty league fans should look forward to these updates.
Smith also hinted at some secret details with these upcoming updates. The dev stated that they have started working on some new maps that will be included in updates by year-end. Smith has teased the community with the hint of not one but 3 upcoming new maps, and he said that the devs would incline these maps competitively. Smith also mentioned that there would be a few easter eggs and testing stuff in these maps. This would be a good addition to the multiplayer aspect of Modern Warfare 2.
There has yet to be a reveal for these maps. However, we can expect some really good work. The only problem is that the official tournaments, a.k.a CDL 2023, won’t have these new changes in them. The event will finish by June 18; hence the inclusion of these new changes is not possible. There’s still time for these updates to roll out. So we can expect certain changes to the updated schedules. Until then, let’s hope the game does not die out early on.
