PC and Xbox players are unable to disable crossplay in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Xbox and PC players are noticing that crossplay cannot be disabled in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Activision’s latest Call of Duty release is now live everywhere, allowing PlayStation players to turn crossplay on and off at will. It’s no surprise that Xbox and PC gamers aren’t happy with this.

Xbox players have a variety of reasons for wanting to disable crossplay. For example, trying to stay away from PC cheaters or simply avoiding PC gamers who have the mobility advantage of their mouse and keyboard. Similarly, PC gamers often want to avoid console players and their aim assist.

The PlayStation version of the game includes an option for players to enable or disable crossplay with other platforms. However, this option is completely absent from the Xbox and PC versions in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

There is a crossplay option in the settings menu on Xbox, but as soon as players try to load a playlist, they are forced to enable crossplay. However, on PlayStation you can ignore the prompt in the game and continue with the playlist while crossplay is still disabled.

PC players may prefer to play only with other PC players to avoid playing against opponents who use aim assist. This option is enabled in the PlayStation version of Modern Warfare 2, meaning that PS4 and PS5 owners can only choose to play against other PS4 and PS5 players.

Unless the game has been patched with an option to disable crossplay, the only way for Xbox players to fix this is to disable crossplay at the system level. This will disable crossplay for all games. Here is how players can do this:

  1. Head to the Settings menu on the Xbox console
  2. Go to the General tab and choose ‘Online safety & family’
  3. Choose ‘Privacy & online safety’, and then ‘Xbox Live privacy’
  4. Choose ‘View details & customize’, and then ‘Communication & multiplayer’
  5. Choose ‘Block’ on the tab that says “You can play with people outside Xbox Live’,

PC players do not have the ability to block crossplay at the computer level. Until Activision fixes this in a patch, PC players will have to play against console players.
