History of CS:GO Major
Valve hosts Majors, which bring in the top 24 teams from around the world of CS:GO. The first Major took place in 2013, and since then, the prize pool has grown significantly. Major is one of the most lucrative tournaments, offering up to $2 million in rewards. It is an annual CS:GO championship event held in different locations around the world. Despite being a decade old, Major tickets sell out like hotcakes. The arenas are usually jam packed with supporters and is broadcast around the world in multiple languages. The Paris Major will offer a $1.25 million prize pool, the same as the previous year’s Rio Major.
It is unclear whether this change is connected to the summer tournament break being moved to June 12-July 9, around a month earlier than in previous years, as Valve has not commented on the reasons. The Counter-Strike Professional Players’ Association (CSPPA) said at the time that it would engage in dialogue with Valve to “better align with the CS:GO Majors” regarding official tournament breaks.
Announcement met with mix reactions
Despite CS:GO’s popularity, Valve seem to be move on from the game. Valves decision to cancel the second Major of 2023 met with mixed reactions from the community. While some appreciated the move, others expressed concern over the revenue loss for the teams who factor in these events into their yearly budgets. Complexity General Manager, Graham “messioso” Pitt, took to Twitter to voice his concerns and hopes that the first Major of 2024 will come with “significant boost to revenue opportunities since there will only be one event.
Various orgs also posted on twitter about the change in the CS:GO Calander. Popular CS:GO streamer flom expressed his disappointment for waiting a year for CS2 Major to take place:
