Disney has built an empire in nearly every form of entertainment media. The company has stellar movie franchises, such as the MCU, Star Wars, and Avatar. It also has incredible TV Shows on its Disney+ app and even theatre franchises with Hamilton. Entertainment is now looking to penetrate the gaming industry with its tie-up with Epic Games.

Disney recently partnered with Epic Games, announcing an investment of $1,500,000,000 to acquire an equity stake in Fortnite’s developers Epic Games. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

This will allow them to create new games, use their IPs, and create a whole entertainment universe in the game itself. Disney announced the collaboration by releasing a press statement about the news.

Epic Games also launched a trailer announcing the collaboration. The trailer comprises many Disney-owned franchises, such as Avatar, Marvel and Pixar, appearing in the Fortnite universe.

Disney buys equity in Epic Games, gives them access to their original IPs

Epic Games announced that this collaboration aims to create a social universe that will bring Disney stories to life. This collaboration is set to offer many opportunities to Fortnite’s 100 million+ player base to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more.

Disney and Epic Games have had a working relationship for multiple years. Fortnite often includes Disney crossover skins such as Marvel. Additionally, many Disney video games, such as Kingdom Hearts 3 and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor are built using Unreal Engine 3, a gaming development engine created by Epic Games themselves.

Disney further added that this is their biggest entry into the gaming industry and offers them significant opportunities for growth and expansion. This will help bring their stories to a new and previously untapped market. Fans are excited to see what new game modes and cosmetics the partnership will bring to Fortnite.
