Amazon to Acquire EA? What Impact Will the Acquisition Bring?
Amazon has been trying to boost its own video games business and general involvement in video games for many years. It has been trying to get that side of its organization moving, but until now it has only released the game called New World. Other video game projects have either been canceled or released and then unreleased.
If Amazon were to acquire the gaming giant, it would without doubt mark a turning point in its video games business. If the rumors are true, we could be hearing news of the purchase of EA very soon, possibly in a matter of hours! Amazon is Reportedly Making an Offer to Buy EA
It may only be a matter of hours within which the rumours of Amazon’s acquisition of Electronic Arts will either be confirmed or denied. The news comes from a tweet by reliable gaming news provider GLHF, in which the main source is traced to a news report made by USA Today. EA has been involved in many acquisition rumours for a while now. Over the past few weeks companies such as Apple, Disney, and Amazon have all been listed as potential contestants involved to buy EA out.
It now looks like Amazon has gotten rid of the competition and is in pole position to land the Electronic Arts. EA’s revenue is mainly reliant on business made from FIFA, Madden and its popular sports games on consoles. Apex Legends is the EA’s largest non-sports title, which is a free-to-play shooting game that is still popular and continues to generate revenue for EA.
Acquiring EA would immediately put Amazon on the map as a major player in the gaming industry and would come with several possible opportunities to adapt Amazon’s footprints in many areas. The acquisition of EA would open the company up to partnerships with more studios in the industry. This acquisition of EA would provide Amazon access to massive data in the form of IP, data from EA Sports, Apex Legends, Dragon Age, etc.
The access to the data could also be used by Amazon to produce its TV shows and movies on its own
streaming platform, Prime Video. The acquisition would also allow Amazon to use EA Sports for more partnerships with leagues and franchises to strengthen its sports content on Prime Video too.
There is also potential for Amazon to use the model of the X-Box Game Pass and formulate its own type of pass (something called an Amazon Prime Pass for example) just for the sports and video games section, which would grant special access with a number of games involved in the “pass” as well. This could however be expensive, especially if Amazon makes it mandatory to purchase a pass in order to play the game we want.
