Epic is contributing two weeks’ worth of Fortnite earnings to the Ukraine rescue effort

Today marks the start of a new season of Fortnite, and producer Epic Games has pledged to donate all of the game’s profits from the first two weeks to humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. From March 20th through April 3rd, all “real-money transactions” in the game, such as purchased V-bucks, subscriptions, gifted battles passes, and specific cosmetic packs, will be included in the activity.

(Using V-Bucks in Fortnite will not be included because they are not real-money purchases, according to Epic.) It will also cover retail gift card purchases if they are used within the two-week period.

Microsoft would also “contribute their net revenues for Fortnite at this time, so that we can get more relief to the people of Ukraine,” as part of the campaign. Direct Relief, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the World Food Programme are among the organisations that will get funds. More supported organisations will be added “in the coming weeks,” according to the developer.

Epic said it will give funding to these charities “as soon as possible.” We’re not waiting for the funds to arrive from our platform and payment partners, which can take a long time depending on how the transaction was handled. We’ll log transactions as they come in and deliver donations to humanitarian aid organisations within days.”

Other gaming-related campaigns have raised millions of dollars for humanitarian help in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this month, an Itch.io bundle of independent games raised more than $6 million, and a Humble Bundle centred on Ukraine has already collected more than $9 million..

The new season of Fortnite will premiere later today, and it will follow a dramatic event that began a new chapter in the game in December.
