Electronic Arts, the publishers of Apex Legends, recently launched a partnership with Square Enix through the Apex Legends and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth collaboration.

The crossover is accompanied by various new cosmetics, such as character skins, a new melee weapon, and a new game mode that allows you to wield the Buster Sword R2R5 from Final Fantasy 7.

However, the event has not launched as successfully as the two gaming industry titans would have liked. Electronic Arts has long been under fire for overpriced in-game items across multiple franchises they own. This event is no exception, as fans are outraged over a death box skin costing nearly $360.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Apex Legends special events work on a collection-based system. Each event introduces 24–36 items into the game across various rarities.

These items are exclusive to loot boxes accompanying the event and are unlocked randomly. These boxes can only be opened with the game’s premium currency, Apex coins.

Completing the collection, that is, unlocking all items from an event, would reward you with a special item. This item is usually a loom.

Heirlooms are cosmetic melee weapons exclusive to a particular legend in the game. However, unlocking a single event’s items would cost around $200–300, depending on the number of items and their rarity. You can only unlock 1-2 items in each event if you wish to grind for them without paying.

For their latest Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth event, Apex Legends introduced 36 new cosmetic items. Completing the collection rewards you with two items.

First is the Mythic Buster Sword R5 sword. Any legend across any game mode can equip this, although it does not mimic the special abilities it possesses in the exclusive game mode.

The second item is a death box skin. Unlike other battle royales, killing enemies in Apex Legends does not spill their loot on the floor.

It is organized in a special box that legends drop upon death. Electronic Arts has introduced a unique Final Fantasy-themed One-Winged Angel skin for the death box, costing players $360 to unlock.

Fans are accusing the company of introducing such events only for money. EA and Respawn Entertainment are also accused of exploiting their games’ loyal fans.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:

As expected, this has caused massive outrage in the community. Apex Legends fans are already used to overpriced cosmetic items introduced at such special events. However, it seems that the publishers have crossed a line.
