Portrait in a Pickle
Hogwarts Legacy is an action role-playing video game set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game allows players to take on the role of a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where they attend classes and go on magical adventures. Alongside the main story, there are various side quests and activities that players can undertake, such as the “Portrait In A Pickle” quest.
The Portrait in a Pickle side quest is available to players after the completion of In The Shadow of the Relic Side quest. The quest tasks you to find and retrieve the portrait of Ferdinand Octavius Pratt that has been stolen from the Three Broomsticks.
This quest is not a mandatory one for players to complete in order to progress in the story. However, it is needed to complete 100% of the game and it also rewards players with the Oddities Shelf, a decorative item that can be placed in the Room of Requirements.

Hogwarts Legacy walkthrough: Portrait In A Pickle
In order to activate the quest, you need to head to the library and talk to the portrait that is beside the Library Floo Flame. This begins a cutscene and the portrait introduces itself as the portrait of Ferdinand Octavius Pratt. He explains that his other portrait that had been hung in the Three Broomsticks had been stolen and he need you to help him retrieve it. He tells you that he suspects student might have stolen it and even names one of them as Astoria Crickett. Following the end of the cutscene, the protagonist suggest talking to Astoria Crickett before searching for clues to find the portrait.
Find Astoria Crickett
After the conversation with the portrait of Ferdinand Octavius Pratt, you are to find Astoria Crickett at the Three Broomstick. The location is marked on your map and you can choose to travel here on your broom or the floo flame in Hogsmead. On finding Astoria Crickett inside the establishment, she explains that Ferdinand reports the conversations of students to the headmaster, which is why she hired thieves to move it to a different location. She then reveals that the thieves had taken the portrait to a ruins near the coast.
Head to Marunweem Ruins
You can find the Marunweem Ruins located near the Marunweem Lake found on the southern side of the map. However it is a bit tricky to reach the location as you have to fight your way through a goblin encampment located in east side of South Sea Bog. After clearing the encampment fly to the marked location on your broom. Once you have reached the ruins, you will have to fight a couple of Poachers and Ashwinders to get access to the cave that contains the portrait.
After defeating the enemies head down the path into the cave where you will find a locked door at the end of the path. The locked door will have a level 2 lock on it and requires the second level of Alohomora to open it. If player have not unlocked that spell, they need to find nine demiguise moons and return them to Gladwin Moon in Hogwarts to learn the spell.
Ferdinand Octavius Pratt Portrait
Once you get the door open, you will find the portrait in the room and have to talk to it. This starts a cut scene with a conversation with Ferdinand Octavius Pratt’s portrait. After the short conversation you can choose between 3 options on what to do with the portrait . Choosing any of these options does not affect the rewards of the quest.
Option 1: (Take it to Three Broomsticks) – If you decide to take the portrait back to its original place in the Three Broomsticks, the portrait will thank you and you will receive the reward for the quest.
Option 2: ( Take it to Hog’s Head Tavern)- If you choose to take the portrait to Hogs Head inn, Ferdinand Octavius Pratt will complain about it being a dirty place. However the owner of the tavern will tell the protagonist that the portrait will be a good target practice for patrons.
Option 3: (Burn it) – The third option is simple you just burn the portrait as it cries and the quest ends.
