Hogwarts Legacy was among the most anticipated games of 2023. It is based on the Wizarding World created by J.K. Rowling and is set 200 years prior to the events in Harry Potter books and media. Initially, there were mass boycott calls for the game due to the transphobic nature of J.K. Rowling. She had made some derogatory comments about trans people. Avalanche Software, the developers of the game, made it clear that Rowling was not involved in making Hogwarts Legacy. Also, the game features an original storyline—nothing like you have seen or read.

Despite all this, Hogwarts Legacy witnessed a good number of pre-orders and sold over 12 million in the first 2 weeks of release. Hogwarts Legacy has consistently ranked high in sales rankings since its release and has smashed the record for the biggest WB Games launch on Steam. Now, after 5 weeks of release, Hogwarts Legacy has outsold one of the most popular video games of 2022, breaking yet another astounding sales record.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed the all-time sales record of Elden Ring in the UK. Elden Ring sold over 20 million copies within its first year and also was one of the Best selling games of 2022. It is big deal given that Hogwarts Legacy has only been released for PC and next-gen consoles. Despite a 31% drop, Hogwarts Legacy was also the Best-seller of the week in the UK.

All these sales records are majorly owing to the huge Harry Potter loyal fan base. Fans wanted to experience how it feels to be in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft And Wizardry. Now they can thanks to Warner Bros. Games. Hogwarts Legacy itself is super fun to play. You can do a number of things while completing the main quests. Devs are also regularly monitoring the game and rolling out patches to fix bugs.

Head of GamesIndustry, Christopher Dring also pointed out that this WB title will surpass LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in the UK after it digitally arrives. So when the port for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One comes on 5 May 2023, its sales are expected to grow further. It was supposed to release on 4 April however devs pushed the release date further.

Nonetheless, Hogwarts Legacy has resulted as a cash cow for Warner Bros. Games. It is a good sign as the developers can consider releasing some DLC in the future.
