How to complete the Elden Ring Black Knife Catacombs quest: Complete walkthrough

The Black Knife Catacombs is one of the minor dungeons situated in Liurnia in Elden Ring. It is an optional dungeon that houses some valuable treasure items and a challenging miniboss. This article will provide players with all the necessary information, including the dungeon’s location, walkthrough, and tips to overcome the enemies within.

The Black Knife Catacombs can be found in northern Liurnia, east of the Erdtree, in a small canyon accessible via an eastern path. Once players arrive, they will encounter Lhutel the Headless, a headless enemy wielding a flaming sword. Lhutel guards the dungeon entrance.

Players will then notice a pair of double doors buried in the cliff face that leads to the Site of Grace. Descending the left-hand steps of the Site of Grace, they will encounter a Skeleton. These skeletons can be tricky to defeat since they can resurrect. However, players can avoid that by striking them once the blue light appears on their corpse.

As the players reach the bottom of the stairs, they will come across a Summoning Pool and locked doors. In the left-hand corner of the room, players can find Root Resin, and at the top of the stairs to the left, players can find a Grave Glovewort (2) plant. At the bottom of the stairs, players can find a Grave Violet plant. Two skeletons will come to life as they approach the bottom, but they cannot defeat them until they vanquish the necromancer enemy with the staff further down the corridor.

On the left side of the room, Elden Ring players will find an Imp Seal, which, once unlocked, will reveal two skeletons, a swordsman in the center of the room, and an archer in the immediate left-hand corner. After defeating them, loot the corpse on the right to obtain the Rosus’ Axe weapon.

As players head back to the hallway, take a left turn. Here, they will find a Grave Glovewort (2) plant on the left. On the right side of the path, there are several sharp blades hanging from above. These blades require precise timing to dodge. Two skeleton archers are positioned beyond the blades, making the situation more complicated. These archers will continue to resurrect, so once they’re down, sprint down the stairs and prepare for a skeleton on the right. Close to the coffin lies a Grave Glovewort (3). These are all upgrade materials players can use to upgrade weapons and stats in Elden Ring.

To the left side of the room, players will see a ladder leading downwards. Descend down the ladder to enter a large sewer room filled with small crabs. Players will come across several Grave Violet and Grave Glovewort plants around the room. As players head towards the right, they will see a corpse and a giant crab will emerge from the ground. Attack it as soon as it surfaces, and they should be able to take it down easily with a few strikes. The corpse contains a Rune Arc. But be careful, a second giant crab will also emerge from the area they entered from.

Return to the room with the blades and undying archers. Wait for a blade to fall in the center of the room, then position it under where it dropped, allowing it to lift players up, and giving them access to the higher platform. There, take out the necromancer to eliminate the archers below, as well as the skeleton guarding the necromancer.

As players continue down the pathway, run past the two skeleton archers and turn right to face another necromancer. Defeat them, and all three skeletons in the room will die instantly. Keep moving forward and enter a room with a skeleton warrior on the right and an archer on the left. Take them out, and then strike the back middle wall to reveal a hidden path leading to a mist wall.

Fighting the Black Knife Assassin in Elden Ring

Encountering the Black Knife Assassin is a daunting task, especially as it is a full-health, more aggressive variant of the one found in the Deathtouched Catacombs in Limgrave. To even the odds, it’s a good idea to use the gold summon sign outside the mist wall and bring in D, Hunter of the Dead to fight alongside them. Using any Spirit Ashes will also help draw the boss’s attention away from them briefly.

The Black Knife Assassin performs a spin with its blade planted into the ground, which ends in a slash outward. All attacks during the fight are aggressive and significantly faster than what they may have encountered before. The slash at the end of the spin can send players flying backward, giving the Assassin ample time to launch a follow-up attack. Players keeping their distance is crucial as the Assassin winds up for most attacks.

The Assassin’s spectral dodge into a lunge attack with its knife. This is also incredibly speedy and can stagger players temporarily if they are hit. This Assassin also has a couple of unique moves, such as a spinning launch into the air with a lock-on slam attack that deals heavy damage. It can be dodged, but the timing needs to be precise before the Assassin lands back on the ground.

Another move to watch out for is the grab attack. The Assassin signals its attack by swinging its left arm backward before lunging forward to plunge its knife into the player’s chest. This attack can quickly drain players’ health.

Defeating the Assassin will grant players the Assassin’s Cerulean Dagger and the Black Knifeprint. The Assassin’s Cerulean Dagger is a quick and agile weapon in Elden Ring. As players exit the room, take note of the opening to the left, where the skeleton archer was stationed. Dropping down will take players back to the sewer area but on the other side of the metal fence.

Here, they will encounter a skeleton warrior in the corner, and there are two levers to pull. One of them opens the locked doors at the start of the Catacombs. However, the other unlocks the metal gate door, providing a shortcut back. Players then have to fight another skeleton warrior. It will emerge next to them after pulling the lever to open the metal gate.

After doing so, players can return to the entry area of the Catacombs. Here, they will find the previously closed metal doors now open. These doors now lead to another mist wall. Players can walk through it to progress further in Elden Ring.
