Riot comes under fire for their selection of streamers in League of Legends Worlds 2022 Finals

League of Legends

Riot Games is being criticized for their selective nitpicking of streamers to stream the League of Legends finals as a constituent in their Watch party. This criticism stems from the fact that Riot has taken in streamers without consideration of the entire community. Gamers and ex-pros along with certain streamers are calling it a marketing gimmick to attract the attention of a diversified fan base to increase the popularity of the game.

The primary problem stems from the fact that Riot has been severely disruptive of the streamers’ attempts to create watch parties, going so far as to disincentivize and actively ban streamers from streaming or disrupting by creating time delays that never synchronized with the real game time. This meant that the streamers and their audience were always behind schedule at any Riot streaming event and it was only by joining the official Riot stream that the community could keep up with the game in real time.

The problem that the community has with Riot on the selection of the streamers is primarily the limited number, and secondly the difference in diversity along with not allowing for streamers with larger fanbases and those who actually made the game popular to stream it real time. Although this makes sense from a commercial point of view, compelling its audience to watch a particular stream while having gathered a reputation for banning ex-pros and streamers who had previously tried streaming makes the community question Riot.
