For the first time ever, eSports will be seen as a medal event at the Asian Games. The Olympic Council of Asia had announced eight different titles to be played at the 19th Asian Games that is going to take place in Hangzhou, China from 10th September and conclude on 25th September.
The titles selected include some immensely popular games such as PUBG Mobile, Arena of Valor, DOTA 2 and others. It is important to note here that the two of the games- PUBG Mobile and Arena of Valor were banned in India due to privacy concerns. Much to the surprise, the RS Minister brought this to the attention of other ministers.
“The subject of special mention of the house, which is about developing a prudent ecosystem of Esports, including legally permissible e-gaming. I would like to draw the attention of the house to the fact that among the eight games that are medal sports in the Asian Games 2022 two are banned in India by the Ministry of Electronics Information Technology, due to Data pilferage concerns.”
He further added that the country should have a more holistic approach towards eSports and gaming so that eSports athletes can be selected for the qualifying tournaments in a transparent manner. While championships for games like DOTA 2, FIFA 22 and others has already begun, the future of PUBG Mobile and Arena of Valor remains bleak.
Indeed, the alternative of PUBG Mobile exists in India that goes by the name Battlegrounds Mobile India, there is currently no replacement for Arena of Valor. With a bright and promising response from the eSports market, the government needs to ramp up procedures for expanding the growth of eSports.
