Russian gamers are no longer allowed to compete in Fortnite competitions with cash rewards,

Epic Games’ Fortnite team stated today that Russian Fortnite players are no longer able to compete in Fortnite competitive events with cash rewards. The decision will take effect on March 11th.

Players will still be able to “earn in-game cosmetic awards,” according to the release. Any Russian participants who have not claimed their prize money from past tournaments must complete the prize verification process by March 22. Unclaimed cash awards will be “frozen” until Epic’s payment service provider is able to begin supporting prizes for Russian players.

Epic games announcement about Fortnite competitions for Russian gamers

The announcement’s wording suggests that Epic Games is being compelled to make this decision rather than making it voluntarily. It’s likely that the organisation or institution through which Epic pays out is either reluctant or unable to pay Russian gamers due to the country’s sanctions.

The declaration came two weeks after Russia began its invasion of Ukraine. In the aftermath of the invasion, a slew of corporations, developers, and tournament organisers have stopped doing business with Russia. Nintendo, Bungie, Sony, YouTube, Twitch, EA, Apple, Activision Blizzard, AMD, Intel, and a slew of other companies have ceased sales or services in Russia in the last week. Epic Games ceased Fortnite and sales and transactions a few days ago.

Other businesses have taken a more proactive stance in the face of the invasion. Devs Hi-Rez Studios and Riot Games have both donated to the Ukrainian situation, and Liquid’s WoW guild is gathering funds through their Race to World First event, among other things.
