Pokimane banned on Twitch amid DMCA claims

As they broadcast from New York, Mizkif yells obscenities to embarrass Pokimane.

Even the strongest of us can succumb. After streaming the popular cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender on Twitch on Friday night, Imane “Pokimane” Anys, one of the most prominent streamers on the network with over 8.5 million followers, was banned from the platform. The reason for the ban is unknown, however, it is most likely the result of a DMCA violation.

The streamer was watching and casting the Nickelodeon show on her stream. To about 25,000 peak concurrent viewers which isn’t a small number during the stream, according to Twitchtracker. Anys did not respond to a question about how long the restriction would extend on her other social media channels.

Anys’ Twitch channel, however, is currently inactive at the time of publication. When it comes to DMCA allegations, Twitch has a three-strike policy, therefore her channel will most likely be reinstated.

Twitch streamers who broadcast and comment on television are a newer trend. It’s becoming a common approach to get viewers’ attention, and it’s known as “TV meta.” Félix “xQc” Lengyel and Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker, two popular variety streamers, broadcasted viewings of the competitive cooking show MasterChef on their channels in December.

Does this mean the end of Pokimane on Twitch?

Pokimane is a face of the Twitch brand at a time when other well-known broadcasters have left for YouTube, such as Ludwig Ahgren. The streamer signed a multi-year contract with Twitch in 2020. Anys joked on Twitter after the ban that the “fire nation attacked,” a reference to a popular meme from the show she was likely barred from broadcasting.

Nonetheless, the tactic is hazardous, as Twitch has a history of removing content in response to takedown requests from businesses. To comply with copyright regulations for music, the streaming platform encouraged streamers to remove the content in 2020.

Copyright holders who have filed DMCA requests are notified by Twitch, and Twitch responds. Because ViacomCBS owns Avatar: The Last Airbender, the request would be made through its legal staff.

A possible DMCA action against such a well-known streamer might have far-reaching consequences for Twitch’s bigger TV meta trend. While Anys’ channel is likely to be resurrected, it’s unclear how other major variety broadcasters would react to shows that are under fear of being taken down.
