Released after the disaster that was WWE 2K20, WWE 2K22 had a lot riding on it. WWE 2K20 was a disastrous launch for the World Wrestling Entertainment and 2K Studios. The game was met with horrible reviews from critics and harsh criticism from fans of the genre. The game took away from the essence of what made WWE 2K games so great.

WWE 2K20 was filled with glitches, terrible online gameplay, a new control system, and an awful engine. The game was so poorly received that 2K altogether cancelled the next installment in the franchise, WWE 2K21. Hence, when WWE 2K22 was released two years later with Rey Mysterio on the poster, fans were hoping for a great product.

For the most part, WWE 2K22 delivered on its promises. It once again gave sports entertainment fans a game they could enjoy. WWE 2K23 followed up on the success of its predecessor as well. However, fans of the WWE 2K series have received some heartbreaking news recently announced by the developers.

WWE 2K22 is biding adieu in the first month of 2024

The WWE 2K22 servers are officially shutting down on January 3rd, 2024, a mere 22 months after the game’s initial launch. This means you will no longer be able to enjoy the game’s online features and community creations after that date. You will still be able to enjoy the single-player and offline co-op features of the game.

Fans have questioned what this means for the future of the WWE 2K games. Online servers of certain games stay up for as long as a decade in some cases. However, the WWE 2K22 servers are shutting down within two years. The lack of interest from 2K in sustaining the game’s online features has impacted fans’ willingness to invest in future installments.

There has been no official announcement about the game’s sequel either. However, fans expect that WWE 2K24 will be announced on January 27th, the day of WWE’s Premium Live Event, the Royal Rumble. Fans hope this is just a rare occurrence in the case of WWE 2K22 and not for WWE 2K23 and future games.
