In the past decade, many streaming platforms have come up to take down Amazon-owned Twitch’s monopoly over live streaming. Platforms such as Mixer and Rumble put much effort into the battle. However, these companies have either shut down or are unsuccessful. Twitch seems to be getting a new competitor with X livestreams.

Elon Musk has taken another step in his attempt to reshape the platform. Elon Musk has tried to get creators like MrBeast to post their content on X. However, poor monetization has always been a hurdle. To combat this, the world’s richest man has revealed plans to introduce livestream monetization on the popular social media platform.

Elon Musk has long been testing X livestream capabilities. Over the past few months, Musk demonstrated X livestreaming features by broadcasting himself playing Diablo 4 to an audience of millions from his personal account. Musk outlined his vision for making X a viable competitor to platforms like Twitch and Kick in this stream.

Elon Musk emphasised the importance of X appealing to content creators. He wants to achieve this through a revenue-sharing model. He elaborated that all advertising revenue generated from an X livestream would go solely to the creator. Musk also disclosed features such as tipping and paid subscriber plans that would soon make their way to the platform.

The CEO of Tesla further mentioned that he would give creators the option of whether they wanted to allow subs on their channel or not. The content creators would also be free to choose the amount for which they wish to offer a monthly subscription. This would come with many exclusive features, such as subscriber-only chats that the creator can easily read.

This is not the first time a social media platform has tried to compete with Twitch. Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook Gaming to take down Twitch regarding video game streaming. Despite many successful signings to the platform, Facebook Gaming was unsuccessful in their attempt. It will be interesting to see whether X livestream monetization proves successful.
