Release Date & Platforms
Springtime always brings it with a new instalment in the MLB baseball series. The release date for MLB The Show 24 will likely follow the same pattern that San Diego Studios has established in the past few years. In the previous two years, the release date of MLB The Show has lined up perfectly with the Opening Day of the MLB Season.
While the Opening Day for the regular season is March 28, 2024, a two-game series takes place on March 21 and 22. This series takes place between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers and will be played in Seoul. All that said, it is likely that the release date for MLB The Show 24 will be Tuesday, March 26, 2024. The game will be released for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
A degraded version of the game is also likely to come out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, as it did last year. The graphics and framerate are downgraded on the older consoles to ensure that the game runs smoothly for these platforms. There is also reduced crowd density and fewer animations. However, the gameplay itself is still as solid as it would be in the newer generation. To compensate for these downgrades, the game also launches at a lesser price point for them.
MLB The Show 24 Cover Player
San Diego Studio has not officially announced who will be on the cover of MLB The Show 24. However, there are three players who are in strong contention to be the next face of the series. The players most likely to be featured on MLB The Show 24 are –
- Julio Rodriguez – Rodriguez is a 21-year-old star who plays for the Seattle Mariners. He is considered one of baseball’s brightest young stars. He is having a breakout season in 2023 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs in 91 games. The young star is also a Gold Glove contender in centre field, which makes him a likely choice to be featured on the cover of MLB The Show 24.
- Elly De La Cruz – This 20-year-old had a meteoric rise through the minor leagues and has now played for the Cincinnati Reds. The young superstar already has two home runs and a batting average of .348 in his first ten games.
- Shohei Ohtani – This megastar is more experienced than the other contenders on the list. Also called “Shotime”, Shohei Ohtani plays for the Los Angeles Angels. He hits for power while at the same time being an excellent pitcher. Ohtani is a proven face, as he has already been on the cover of a game in the series once, in MLB The Show 22.
San Diego Studios doesn’t shy away from putting a young and rising star’s face on the cover of their games. They can easily go for either Rodriguez or De La Cruz, which will make for a solid choice. If San Diego Studios wishes to go for a more established star, Shotei Ohtani continues to be a great choice from 2022 or other established superstars in the baseball world.
Other players who are also in contention for being featured are –
- Aaron Judge (New York Yankees)
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays)
- Juan Soto (San Diego Padres)
- Fernando Tatis Jr. (San Diego Padres)
- Ronald Acuna Jr. (Atlanta Braves)
Enhancements & Features
MLB The Show 23 introduced card sets and seasons in Diamond Dynasty. Some players have complained about how these features have resulted in recycled content and best cards hidden behind expensive packs. It is likely that San Diego Studios will work towards fixing these issues in the next instalment. The game will also continue introducing more legendary players to their game to pay tribute. We can also expect minor tweaks to the gameplay as the developers continue to make the gameplay feel smoother.
Pre-order Details
The official statements about MLB The Show 24 will likely start coming out in January 2024. This is also the time when pre-orders go live, along with information about the cover player and pre-order bonuses. The game will likely be a day-one arrival on the Xbox Game Pass. Buying deluxe editions also comes with four days early access to the game, which will likely begin on March 22, as the Seoul games get underway.
All Editions and their Price
MLB The Show 24 will be launched at $69.99 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One. To compensate for the downgraded version on older consoles, the game launches at a cheaper price point of $59.99 for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. The game is also accompanied by a digital deluxe edition that costs $99.99.
MLB The Show 23’s digital deluxe edition included several bonuses, including a Captain’s Choice Pack, a general Choice Pack, a special uniform Choice Pack, five Gold Choice Packs, 20 Show Packs, and a Ballplayer Pack, each of which offered high-value unlockables. You also get four days of early access and double daily rewards. The digital deluxe edition of MLB The Show 24 is expected to contain similar, if not the same, rewards accompanying it.
Like NBA 2K24, the MLB series also releases a special edition commemorating a player’s legacy at $99.99. The physical cover of the special edition features the legacy player rather than the player on the standard edition’s cover. You also get a physical steel book and a baseball cap along with it. Some of the digital rewards are toned down to keep this edition’s price on par with the digital edition.
Last year, a “Captain’s Edition” commemorated the legacy of New York Yankees’ legendary Derek Jeter. The legacy player who will be featured on MLB The Show 24’s cover has not been announced yet.
