The victims of OJ Simpson‘s families are unlikely to find peace even after his demise. Throughout his lifetime, the former NFL running back escaped making payments to the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. The families are now attempting to ensure they get compensated for what is left of his estate. However, this may be easier said than done.
The latest challenge in the victims’ hopes to be compensated is a tax hurdle. Malcolm LaVergne, the lawyer of OJ Simpson, revealed to TMZ that in California, there exists a tax lien of $572,402.69 against his property. This is yet another setback for the families that continue to wait on the $33.5 million settlement that he was required to pay in 1997.
The amount owed with interest is now around an estimated $100 million. Simpson was found liable for the deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson in the civil trial that shortly followed after his acquittal by the jury in the criminal proceedings. According to LaVergne, he met with the families of the victims at his office earlier this month wherein Goldman’s mother Sharon Rufo was present, but there were no reps from Nicole’s side despite being invited.
OJ Simpson’s lawyer is hoping to fight the lien against his property in the court of law
He showed them the tax returns of the deceased running back, his 401K, his bank statements, and other financial details to make them aware of his situation. Following this, he assured them that they would be accepted into Simpson’s estate in order to be paid the dues owed to them.
The $500k debt was one that even LaVergne did not see coming. His mission at the moment is to fight the lien in a court of law. For the families, this is disappointing, as it would mean having to wait more without any promise of when they will finally be compensated. Simpson’s estate contains a lot of memorabilia that the running back acquired through his lifetime.
His lawyer believes items such as his Heisman trophy, paintings, golf clubs, black SUV, and grand piano, amongst others, could help fetch significant amounts. Recently, a recital itinerary dated on the day Simpson was alleged to have murdered Nicole and Ron was auctioned off. The hope is for fans to step in and acquire these goods through means of an auction.
