The Colorado Rockies will once again have a player named “Holliday” representing them. During the 2025 MLB draft on Sunday, the Rockies picked up Ethan Holliday, son of franchise great Matt Holliday as the No.4 overall pick.

The infielder was ranked top in the MLB’s pipeline for the 2025 overall draft. However, after the Washington Nationals picked Eli Willits as the No.1 draft pick, Holliday was picked up by the Rockies.

His father, Matt Holliday, was picked by the Rockies in the seventh round of the 1998 draft. He would go on to make his MLB debut with them in 2004 and played a key part in the Rockies’ first trip to the World Series in 2007. At that time, Ethan was just 8 months old.

Moments after the Rockies drafted him, the team would reshare an image of his dad holding him in his arms while he sported the purple colors of the team.

Ethan Holliday now joins his brother as one of the top 5 draft picks. His brother, Jackson Holliday, was drafted as the No.1 overall pick in the 2022 draft by the Baltimore Orioles. This year, he has been one of the shining stars for the Orioles while batting with a .259 average and having 12 home runs and 38 RBI.

Fans on X would troll him for getting drafted to the Rockies. Many would bring up the current form of the team and take online jabs at the team. One user wrote, “Career over already” while making their feelings known.

Check out that and some other reactions from X below:

The Rockies are going through a tough time. The team has lost 7 of their last 10 games and enter the All-Star Game with a poor 22-74 record.

Last year, the Chicago White Sox created the record for the most losses in a season at 121 and finished the season with a 41-121 record. The Rockies are currently on pace to break that unwanted record.

Ethan Holliday ‘grateful’ to get chance to follow his father’s footsteps after getting drafted by Rockies

After Eli Willits, Tyler Bremmer, and Kade Anderson got picked by the Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Angels, and Seattle Mariners, respectively, the Colorado Rockies roped in Ethan Holliday. After getting picked by them, the youngster expressed gratitude for getting the chance to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Holliday’s father, Matt, was drafted in 1998 and spent 10 years with the organization. He would earn 3 All-Star appearances while repping the Rockies and was named the NLCS MVP in 2007 as they reached the World Series that year.

While speaking with MLB Network regarding his draft, the young Holliday expressed that he did not have words to describe his feelings.

I mean a lot. This is a really incredible opportunity. I’m so driven by faith, and I’m so grateful and the Lord has really been the centerpiece of my life…I don’t even know what words to put into this, and the Rockies organization I’m just so thankful and obviously with the family and my dad being drafted by them.

The 6-foot-4 infielder had a stunning final year with Stillwater High School in Oklahoma. He hit with an incredible .611 batting average while having 19 home runs and 64 RBIs last season. The Rockies would be hoping he could bring some of this to the major leagues, as they are in desperate need of some change.
