Arsenal were at their very best as they put three goals past Championship club Preston on Wednesday. The EFL Cup clash was witness to a number of well-worked goals from Mikel Arteta‘s men, as 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri stunned the crowd with a brilliant left-footed finish. His goal was so impressive that fans started comparing his technique to that of Lionel Messi!

Arsenal opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Gabriel Jesus fired in a volley from close range in a corner routine. Not ten minutes had passed as 17-year-old Nwaneri stepped up to score one of the finest goals scored by an Arsenal player this season. His left-footed curler from outside the edge of the penalty area evaded the reach of Freddie Woodman and went into the top left corner.

The killer blow for the hosts came through Kai Havertz, whose bullet header gave the keeper no time to react. The win meant that Arsenal booked their spot in the 5th round of the competition.

Nwaneri came close to finding the net on several other occasions as well, but was denied by the woodwork.

Nwaneri also made a five-minute cameo against Liverpool after being subbed on in the final minutes. Nwaneri will most likely be called up by the manager in Arsenal’s next Premier League game against Newcastle United.

As things stand, the Gunners are third in the League table and have 18 points from nine games. The club is five points behind League leaders Manchester City and will need a sequence of good results in the upcoming games if they are to catch up with their rivals. Liverpool are in the second place with 22 points. Arsenal are set to play Chelsea, Inter Milan and Sporting in November.
