On Friday, Eugenio Suarez restored himself as a Seattle Mariners hero. In a crucial Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Toronto Blue Jays, he hit two home runs, with one of them being a clutch grand slam late in the game.
The Mariners, who won Games 1 and 2, suffered some big losses in the next two games. A Vladimir Guerrero Jr. masterclass in Game 3 saw them suffer a crushing 13-4 loss. The visitors tied the series at 2-2 with another emphatic win in Game 4.
This made Game 5 an important one for the Mariners. In front of a jam-packed T-Mobile Park, Suarez got things underway with a solo home run in the 2nd inning and put his side in front.
The Blue Jays then fought back. The American League East division champions tied the game a 1-1 through a double from George Springer at the top of the 5th inning. In the next inning, they were 2-1 up through a single from Ernie Clement.
The M’s rallied back in the 8th inning. A towering solo shot from AL MVP frontrunner Cal Raleigh leveled the scores at 2-2. After the home run, relief pitcher Brendon Little gave up back-to-back walks to Jorge Polanco and Josh Naylor. As he failed to record a single out, he was replaced by Seranthony Dominguez.
He ended up hitting Randy Arozarena and loaded up the bases with no outs for Suarez. The third baseman would connect on a 2-2 98 mph fastball and hit an opposite-field grand slam to blow the game wide open at 6-2.

This grand slam from Suarez propelled the Mariners to a 6-2 win and saw them take control of the series once again. This turned out to be the Mariners’ first ALCS victory at home since 2000. The AL West Champions are now one win away from their maiden World Series trip.
Eugenio Suarez calls grand slam in Mariners Game 5 win as the biggest home run of his career
Eugenio Suarez etched his name in Seattle Mariners folklore on Friday. His 2 home run game, including the grand slam, put his side one step closer to the 2025 World Series. After the game, he expressed that this grand slam was the biggest home run of his career.

Suarez had a fantastic regular season in 2025. He started the campaign with the Arizona Diamondbacks and was one of the top performers for them.
On the trade deadline day, he was traded back to the Mariners. He thus became the first player in MLB history to be traded in the middle of the season after hitting 35 home runs. He finished the regular season, one shy of the 50-home run mark with 49 homers and 118 RBIs.
Up until this game, Suarez’s bat in the postseason had been a bit quiet. A 5 RBI game in a crucial Game 5 has now silenced some of the critics.
While speaking with Tom Verducci after their win, Suarez expressed that he was waiting for something like this for a long time.
This is the biggest home run of my career… I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. It’s been a while to have a game like this like today. It was awesome to hit that grand slam to give a win for my team, my fans, they’ve been here supporting us all season long.
Eugenio Suarez said
"For our fans, they have been waiting a long time for this moment and we are here to give it to them. We're here to fight for a World Series."

The Mariners are the only team in MLB history that has not played in the World Series. With the win in Game 5, they just need one more victory to finally reach the Fall Classic.
Game 6 will be held on Sunday in Toronto at Rogers Center. A Toronto Blue Jays win that day will force a Game 7. The Mariners fans would be hoping to avoid that and hoping to get the job done on the weekend.
