Euro 2020 Portugal Vs Belgium Player Ratings as Belgium deal a knockout punch to the defending Champions
FIFA top ranked team Belgium have cemented their place in the last 8 of the EURO 2020, as they emerged victorious from a gripping and tiring round of 16 tie against Defending Champions Portugal at the Estadio De La Cartuja in Seville.
The match was well dominated by the Portuguese contingent under Cristiano Ronaldo, but Thorgan Hazard’s wonderful swerving strike from the edge of the area meant that Belgium came out as the eventual winners, with the Seleçãos unable to find a reply. Belgium will now face Italy in the Quarter finals of the European Championships to set up a high adrenaline clash.
Here are our player ratings for the round of 16 game.
Portugal Player Ratings
Rui Patricio – 5/10
Wasn’t tested much other than the goal, for which he could done better to save.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
Pressed up high and made some darting runs forward. Was there to help his forward lines but was caught out on the defence on some occasions.
Pepe – 6/10
Looked solid at the back and didn’t give away much chances, allowing very little to go through. Received booking for a tempered challenge.
Ruben Dias – 6/10
Back in his rock solid form, clearing whatever came his way and heading away dangerous crosses. Made six interventions but couldn’t react early to offer a block on Hazard’s shot. Header was saved by Courtois.
Raphael Guerreiro – 6/10
Very well balanced defensively, allowing Meunier little space down the flanks. Had to venture wide with little chance and space inroads. Unfortunate as one of his well taken shots hit the far post.
Joao Palhinha – 6/10
Looked shaky in the beginning but settled as the game went on. Excellent track back and made six tackles and a couple of challenges from behind to render Belgium toothless on the attack on few occasions.
Joao Moutinho – 6/10
Good reading of the game and found spaces when to build. Suppressed a bit by the heavy pressure Belgium offered and couldn’t find a way through. Made three ball recoveries.
Renato Sanches – 7/10
Did everything from recovering the ball to carrying the ball forward all by himself. Dispossessed De Bruyne brilliantly on some occasions and took on several players as he darted forward with the ball.
Bernardo Silva – 3/10
Completely invisible for much of the game. Was cut out by the Belgian defence.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 6.5/10
Isolated up front and was in short supply of the balls. Dropped deeper to create chances for others and tried his level best to make things work but his absence in the middle was felt. Had a decent attempt on target from a free kick saved by Courtois.
Diogo Jota – 6/10
Rarely given the chance to make an impact by the Belgian defence. Shot one above the crossbar from close range and had saw another early opportunity go wide.
Substitutes:
Bruno Fernandes – 5.5/10
Joao Felix – 4.5/10

Belgium Player Ratings
Thibaut Courtois – 7/10
Was good under the bars. Threw himself at whatever came his way. Saved a good Dias header and parried away a dangerous Ronaldo free kick.
Toby Alderweireld – 6/10
Had to stay on his toes for most of the match. Good clearances in the middle, offering little to go through. Good build up play under pressure.
Thomas Vermaelen – 7/10
Led his back line, looking calm and solid on the ball. Gave Ronaldo very little chance to capitalise and made 12 interventions.
Jan Vertonghen – 6/10
Dominated aerial duels and made timely interventions to clear any danger that came his way.
Thomas Meunier – 6/10
Very good defensively, winning headers against Ronaldo and offering little space to him out wide. little help in the attack but found out Hazard in space on one occasion which resulted in the goal.
Youri Tielemans – 6/10
Made five ball recoveries as he broke up oppositions play. Also rotated the ball well and made good passes from deep.
Axel Witsel – 6/10
Pressed the Portuguese midfield to stifle out the spaces, and dropped deep to make the defence lines more compact at times.
Thorgan Hazard – 8/10
Helped his team in the defence as well as while going forward. Made some good runs done the flanks. A thunderous strike from the edge of the area to score the only goal of the match, a moment of brilliance. Also tracked back and made six recoveries.
Kevin De Bruyne – 6/10
Was tightly marked high up the pitch and had little opportunity to show his usual skill set. Played as a floating number 10 and dropped deep to make play and find pockets of space occasionally. Made some good runs with the ball but was unfortunate to go off injured just after half time.
Romelu Lukaku – 6/10
Never had the opportunity to make his mark. Bossed by opposition but still managed to make some good runs and link up play. Was dispossessed many times late in the game.
Eden Hazard – 5.5/10
Took some good touches to get out of tight spots but had little impact.
