Since NASCAR dropped the point-based championship format and replaced it with the playoff system, the flaws of it have been a heated topic of discussion. Over the years there has been resistance from the racing community, whenever NASCAR introduced tweaks to the system with the primary objective of having more engagement.

Recently 2012 Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski in his appearance in the Business and Motorsports highlighted these flaws. The RFK Racing owner driver pointed out that NASCAR has to access the situation with the flaws in the system and make a decision on what issues they can afford to keep, and what needs to eliminate.

The current format in my opinion has some flaws, you have to pick the flaws you’re okay with having. So that’s the conversation, what flaws are we okay with having with whatever system.

Brad Keselowski said via Business and Motorsports.

He asserted that the format has made the radical shift and then explained how big the change is. Keselowski asserted that with the original format, every race in the season held importance while with the new format, the final race has too much importance.

From a NASCAR perspective, you know the format has taken a radical shift. It went from the original format which was all-season long, every race matters you know. 25th at Pocono in June might decide the championship. You don’t know until you get to the end, to Well, one race in Phoenix, there’s a champion you’re like whoa.

Brad Keselowski claims the format needs significant change

While further talking about the point, Brad Keselowski pointed out that he does agree with some aspect of the current format owing to the engagement it brings. But at the same time, he believes that significant changes needed for the format.

What I value is something that’s engaging to watch and brings our fans. There is an aspect of it(in the current format), I don’t fully agree with how we got there and where we’re at[…] I would probably make some significant changes if it was my decision to make so that’s probably my best answer

Brad Keselowski said.

The comments from the champion driver shows, the modern format needs some changes that many of the top drivers are calling for. The season finale shouldn’t be the sole race that determines the champion. Race wins and consistency should be rewarded as well.
