Since NASCAR dropped the point-based championship format and replaced it with the playoff system, the flaws of it have been a heated topic of discussion. Over the years there has been resistance from the racing community, whenever NASCAR introduced tweaks to the system with the primary objective of having more engagement.
Recently 2012 Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski in his appearance in the Business and Motorsports highlighted these flaws. The RFK Racing owner driver pointed out that NASCAR has to access the situation with the flaws in the system and make a decision on what issues they can afford to keep, and what needs to eliminate.
He asserted that the format has made the radical shift and then explained how big the change is. Keselowski asserted that with the original format, every race in the season held importance while with the new format, the final race has too much importance.
Brad Keselowski claims the format needs significant change
While further talking about the point, Brad Keselowski pointed out that he does agree with some aspect of the current format owing to the engagement it brings. But at the same time, he believes that significant changes needed for the format.
The comments from the champion driver shows, the modern format needs some changes that many of the top drivers are calling for. The season finale shouldn’t be the sole race that determines the champion. Race wins and consistency should be rewarded as well.
