As the MLB offseason continues in 2025, there are still some big names remaining to be snatched from the free-agency market. Four-time MLB All-Star Pete Alonso is one of them. In the past few days, there have been rumors linking him to a move to the Los Angeles Angels. A former MLB star has now admitted to being skeptical about this deal.

The slugger rejected the qualifying offer from the New York Mets and became a free agent after the end of the 2024 season. Despite the Mets splashing huge cash in the offseason, talks between them and Alonso have come to a stall at the moment.

The LA Angels are one of the teams who are now in the hunt for Alonso. While the team has Nolan Schanuel at first base, they could move to outfield if they land Alonso. Former MLB star, Kevin Frandsen, though thinks that a move of him to Angels, “doesn’t make sense“.

Speaking on the MLB Network Radio, the former San Francisco Giants admitted that Alonso is a player that every team wants. However, he claims that the Angels will have to make several roster changes to make this move work.

It’s funny because you’re trying to draw interest from teams. It just doesn’t make sense in Anaheim, it doesn’t. Everyone should want a Pete Alonso, but what if your roster is built with Nolan Schanuel, Jorge Soler, Mike Trout, with an unknown in Anthony Rendon? How is that a fit? Tell me how that is a fit.

Apart from the Angels, the Toronto Blue Jays are another name that has been linked with Alonso. With the Blue Jays feeling short on Juan Soto‘s pursuit, they are now reported to be one of the teams that are monitoring him.

MLB insider claims New York Mets are still the “best spot” for Pete Alonso

Following the conclusion of the 2024 season, almost everyone knew that Pete Alonso would reject the qualifying offer from the New York Mets and test-free agency. Despite the various interest from other teams, an MLB insider has labeled the Mets are the “best spot” for him.

While discussing Alonso’s future on MLB Network, Jon Morosi expressed that he does not see any other team holding more interest in the first baseman than his original employers.

I still do not see any team in the major leagues that has a better chance of signing Pete Alonso than the New York Mets. That is still his best spot. That is still the spot that I believe values him the most… I do not see a team right now that has more interest in Alonso than his original employer, the New York Mets.

Alonso’s age and contract years are reported to be a factor in his possible signing. So far in his MLB career, the 30-year-old has hit 226 home runs and has batted in 586 runs. Despite his age, he remains a strong bat who could deliver for any team.
