Can Haas’ Toyota ties make it the next big thing in F1?
The Haas F1 team can be the new dark horse on the grid with the support of Japanese automaker Toyota's racing division.

The Haas F1 team joined the grid in 2016 as an all new constructor. The American team showed promise in its early years and finished fifth in 2018. Since then, Haas has gone through a major decline. Though, it seems that there is the possibility of the team’s rise in the coming years.
In 2024, Haas announced a technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing. The Japanese carmaker took its first steps in F1 since quitting the sport at the end of the 2009 season. This deal was seen as a major triumph for Gene Haas‘ squad.
So far, this union has not shown results with just a couple of months of development. However, Toyota’s might as an automotive giant could do wonders for Haas in F1. Albeit, only if the Japanese carmaker resists the urge to have its own works squad in the future.
Haas needed a partner like Toyota
The American team has a strong technical partnership with Ferrari, including a design base in Maranello. Unfortunately, this has not brought results expected by Gene Haas. Relying solely on the Scuderia ensures that Haas would be on the mercy of the Italian team’s efforts. This might have played a part in the team’s struggles in 2020 when even its supplier was having a difficult season.
On the other hand, Toyota will give its complete focus to Gene Haas’ team. The Japanese carmaker has achieved incredible success in other motorsport categories including Le Mans. Thus, a strong tie up can substantially bolster the American squad, particularly when it has also made progress in the past two seasons.
The financial terms of this deal remain unclear. Nevertheless, it will certainly help in reducing the financial burden on Haas which could make way for better effectivity within the squad. Additionally, Esteban Ocon could be a good lead driver for Haas. The Frenchman knows how to work with a manufacturer, courtesy of his stint at Alpine and his Mercedes ties.
Toyota’s expertise could be perfect for Haas. The American team might surprise the entire paddock in 2026 if the two parties handle things effectively this year. Though, a rise in the team’s fortunes would be a long and hard battle.
