Ferrari has been unable to keep up with their highly impressive start to the 2024 season. Maranello scored two race wins amidst Red Bull’s strong pace. However, the team has continued to miss out on major points since Charles Leclerc‘s victory at the Monaco GP. Hence, the Monegasque opened up about how the team ‘threw’ the British GP race with an unusual pitstop strategy.

Charles Leclerc didn’t have much hope of a race win, starting the race from P11 after a failed Qualifying session. The uncertain weather conditions in and around the British GP‘s Silverstone circuit further caused uncertainties in the strategy. Leclerc was forced to pit early under the light rain conditions and switch to Intermediate tires.

This strategy sabotaged a lot of time for Leclerc’s race and set him way behind everyone on the track eventually making him finish in P14. The 26-year-old was further lapped by the drivers ahead. Hence, the Monegasque noted that the strategy was ‘aggressive’ yet it didn’t seem wrong on paper. Furthermore, Charles Leclerc claimed that the strategy made Ferrari the only team to ‘throw the race in the toilet.’

It was aggressive. with the infos i had it didn’t seem wrong to me, facts tells we’re maybe the only car that stopped and we threw the race in the TOILET.
Charles Leclerc said during a post-race interview.

Charles Leclerc claimed ‘nothing went well’ for Ferrari at the British GP

Ferrari was extremely close to matching Red Bull in terms of points in the constructors’ championship. However, due to such botched results, the Italian constructor is quickly losing control of their standings against McLaren. Hence, the team could be ousted from the runner-up spot amidst such failing performances. Leclerc reflected upon the race and noted that nothing seemed right.

Charles Leclerc recalled that he had a feeling of the rain coming in Turn 15. Hence, the team decided on a strategy that Leclerc believed was aggressive yet could’ve worked well. However, the rain came eight laps later than the Monegasque anticipated. As a result, nothing went well and the team scored a mediocre result in Britain.

I had the feeling in T15 the rain was coming, then the guys in pitwall told me the next lap it would start to rain more heavily and i said it’s a bit aggressive but we might make it… then the rain came 8 laps later. we destroyed the tyres and we pitted again. Nothing went well today.
Charles Leclerc noted.

Ferrari will have to desperately rediscover their start-of-the-season form to enable any chances of a late-season competition for the championship. As things currently are, McLaren is the biggest threat to Maranello with Mercedes continuing to close in on the rivals. Hence, it will be exciting to witness how the rest of the season fares out for the Italian constructor.
